Honestly, my wife is the navigator and her using her phone has been a total godsend on vacations. The instructions she gives are usually perfect, and even when I make a mistake and miss an exit, the program immediately generates alternate directions and saves the day. It's made navigation in unusual places five times easier.

To be fair, it does depend some on the app in use on said phone, but even still, the user needs to use a little critical thinking, too. I have had issues before with old, self-contained GPS units (old style Garmin vs phone app) in that roads were changed but the information the unit contained wasn't updated (kept telling me to go straight through a park where they had removed the road and instead put in a T intersection that went around it :P ), but generally the internet connected ones that can pull in new, live data are a lot better at that (especially Google). Most memorable "oh crap, we went the wrong way" moment from following a GPS was actually user error. Following along a highway through NYC and there were two exits almost side by side and I accidentally took the wrong one of the two. Ended up going through the middle of the Bronx.... My girlfriend, who has a hard time with highways in the first place, started having anxiety so bad, that by the time we got out of there, she passed straight out. XD

Smart phone, stupid user.

His comment certainly is an apt observation of modern society. Smart phones seem to have made people stupid.
