I still have a big stack of paper maps somewhere. Not sure why I keep them, but feels wrong to throw them away.

It's a thing. People really do follow their phones blindly, straight into the maw of danger.

I quit buying and collecting paper maps after I got my iPod Touch. Well, I quit buying them, but I still collected free ones for a while. Now, the only paper maps I still have are of historical interest. I study the maps on my phone, now, and if there is a question, I will check a different map. It's the competition of maps that help to keep them current, or at least no more than 3 years out of date. )

I'm reminded of taking my mom on a trip and her telling me the phone was showing we should be a couple of hundred feet to the right of where we were. I said, "Mom, that is clearly a grass field where this road bed used to be and we are obviously on the paved road. Just stop." As Carl above said I read maps before I go. I've heard of people turning into rivers and stuff because the phone told them to. Just wow.

Yeah, that's honestly my standard way of doing it. Though I'm a Luddite who doesn't even own a phone.

I prefer to study the map ahead of time, and just use driving instructions as a check. It comes of using paper maps since the 50s.
