Weekly Update 02/25/20

I read this long interview with Frank Miller and Klaus Janson this week about Daredevil. One of the things that struck me is how they had such similar philosophies about how they wanted to create comics and for their vision of Daredevil. Now, their partnership was mostly an accident. Miller did some good pencil work on a couple issues of Spider-Man (issues that featured Daredevil) and he got moved onto pencilling Daredevil, which already had Klaus Janson doing inking. By 1982, Miller was doing writing and pencils and Janson was inking and coloring, and anyone who has read Daredevil in 1982 can tell you how beautifully meshed their sensibilities are.

It just makes me wonder how often great comics spring from talents recognizing who they best work with and making a point to collaborate, and how much of the time it's just a happy coincidence. In a more modern era, especially in creator owned series where collaborations are dictated by the creators and not editors, it's obviously much more common.

What are some of you favorite collaborations? Off the top of my head, Ditko/Lee, Kirby/Lee, McGregor/ Graham, and Claremont/Byrne are the real standouts for me so far in the club.

I've got a couple small Patreon tweaks to mention.
- The $3 tier dropped panel of the year choice (a lot of work for something people weren't that interested in) and replaced by access to all bonus episodes of the show we do besides My Ultimate Year (The MCU movie reviews, bad comics podcasts, the Q&A audio, etc).
- The $15 tier has now become "Make Zack your personal dancing monkey every three months" Tier. Dictate something specific for Zack to stream on Twitch, whether that be a read-along/ commentary on specific issues, reviewing a trade paperback of your choice, or just streaming a game.

The first scheduled stream will be on Sunday, March 8 at 3PM EST. I'll be streaming issues #1 & #12 of Tom King's Mister Miracle. If you want to read the series ahead of time, it's available on DC Universe or Hoopla.

Englehart/Brunner on Doctor Strange yielded some fantastic comics for how short a time it lasted. I feel like even with Englehart staying in the title, the stories lost a little when Brunner left. Not sure how much that’s a coincidence, but that’s how it felt to me.
