One thing I will say about Bleach's fillers, they come in two varieties, very short stories that are just one or two episodes long, and then there are the longer filler arcs. The one or two-episode fillers are pretty hit or miss, but the longer filler arcs are actually all pretty good, and some of them are actually fantastic. It's just that a lot of times the timing of them, other than the first one, is horrible. Some of them appear right in the middle of even intense parts of canon arcs, which is extremely frustrating. That said, the staff obviously put a lot of effort into making the filler arcs actually good. They weren't as good as the main story, but some of them came pretty damn close, and if it weren't for the horrible timing of most of them, a lot of them you wouldn't even know they were filler unless someone told you. I personally do think that most of the fillers, especially one particular filler arc that is the worst timed one of all later on, are worth seeing at least once, even if you then skip them any later times that the show is rewatched.
And one thing I actually really like about Bleach is that very question you had at the end of your commentary. We don't really know what is the motivation, the end-goal of the story. We know Ichigo wants to protect people, that's been demonstrated by his actions, but really, he's a not-so-ordinary teenager with an ordinary life. He's just trying to live his life as best he can, and it's getting turned on it's head by all these things happening around him, and he's having to react to all of it as best he can. I feel, in that way, Bleach is very realistic, and I really like that about it.
