The Royal Demesne and surrounding lands are commonly referred to as the Land of Castles. Fortified manors of countless dukes, counts and barons dot the land. You'll often encounter lords and knights traveling from town to town and a keen mind might spot a delicate web of political intrigue keeping the place together.
The Royal Demesne is the land under the direct control of the Burbric king, though his control has severely weakened after the War of the Vale. The conflict ended in a stalemate. The treasury is depleted, military power at an all time low and the king has nothing to show for it. The attitude towards Auder XI is starting to change.
Over the course of his rule Auder has made sure to surround himself with allies. Disloyal vassals were stripped of their titles which were then given to Auder's friends. When incriminating evidence couldn't be found or forged Auder would rely on intrigue to displace his potential opponents. Titles in the Royal Demesne and surrounding lands have been changing hands for nearly three decades, but now even his allies are starting to turn on him.
One of the reasons why none of the lords have stood against their king is the face that he is their sole source of power. Few of the lords in these lands have a connection with the common folk, or would even think to consider them. The people don't care who rules over them, and wouldn't mind seeing the lords go altogether. The nobles rely on the king to keep their positions and as such, they won't rise up to him. For now.
