Per month

Hey everyone,

Following up on the last post, I'd like to try out switching this page to a model of "per month" pledges.  To list a few reasons why:

There's no action required on your end.  I change the setting here on Patreon, and the amount you've currently pledged per video will be considered a monthly pledge.

The poll, asking what people feel more comfortable with, was shockingly close, with a slight and not-that-statistically-significant preference for per month.  Here's a screenshot as of this writing:

I mean, wow.

The low conviction as a collective seemed to be matched by a relatively low conviction among individuals in the comments.  There were some exceptions, people who seem to feel strongly one way or another, and I'm definitely sensitive to that, but given that this channel averages one big project per month, nothing about this should be that significant a change.  If anything, should I stick to the goals I have in mind, it should be a better deal for patrons.

Of course, I recognize that there's a certain level of trust implicit in this, namely that I continue my full-time efforts on the channel at a steady rate.  Hopefully, by now you know that there are very few things in this world I care about more than this work.  Believe me, YouTubers have enough pressure to output as regularly as they can, and my main motivation will always be putting out lessons I can feel proud of, with anything financial occupying a lower-order bit than that.

--------------

But enough of that, let's talk about the fun stuff that actually brings us all together.  What new videos are in the pipeline?

I've teased the Hyperdarts puzzle already, and have a finished script with many animations.  It just so happens that Brady Haran of Numberphile is in the Bay Area, and right now I think it might be fun to do this as a collaboration between our channels.  But, you know, keep that hush-hush until the video is actually out there.

I'd explain the puzzle and solution largely in person on brown paper, with Brady even getting a real dartboard to use, then we'd overlay the key animations for the explanations of the more geometric aspects of the solution.  I'll let you know as that gets made, collaborations always take longer than expected, but I think the cross-pollination makes it worthwhile.

The main big project I'm excited about is still the full story of e, and more generally the exp function.  It'll likely be 2 or 3 videos, and the hope is that they can become a standard reference for any students whose confused about what exactly e is, or about the weirdness of Euler's formula (to include why it actually matters for physics), or why you sometimes see e^A when A is a seemingly nonsensical input, like a matrix or a quaternion.  It's a big topic, but one which I don't think is covered properly with the existing videos out there.

This week I'll be at ICERM, a conference on visualizing mathematics, with this week's focus being number theory.  10% of why I'm going is that I'm one of the speakers (I'll try to be sure you and others can see the talk), and 90% is out of excitement to attend the other sessions and meet people there.  A conference about visualizing math?  Could you possibly get anything more up my alley than that?!  I wouldn't be surprised at all if I come away with several good potential video topics and future collaborators in mind.

If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to DM me.  And as always, thank you.

-Grant

Hi Reginald, Possibly! There are many great potential topics, and unfortunately I can't get to most of them. This is one that several others have requested, though. -Grant

Grant, your videos are always extremely fantastic. I'm wondering if you can do a video on spinors vs tensors/vectors. All of the Wikipedia material talks about Clifford algebras and group theory and Lie groups. I just want to know what they do and how to use them in my code. I get that quaternions are involved ( I love them ).

Reginald Carey

Thanks Grant! I appreciate all the work you do.

I was wandering why I have been billed without a video, but I do agree.

Woah - is this the talk? https://icerm.brown.edu/video_archive/?play=2056 I'll be sure to watch it when I get the chance

Have fun at ICERM! It's been filling a lot of my Twitter feed

Certainly. One of the main motives is to make it clear what complex exponentiation is, but also why it arises naturally. It's also important to have a strong intuition here for the sake of the Laplace transform.

Hey Grant, sorry but I haven't been keeping up and haven't heard about this e project/series yet. Question: will that series delve into the complex exponential? I loved your stuff on that before, it really helped me build the base intuition for my complex analysis class, so I'd love to see more in that neighborhood.

I've been working on that dart problem since you posted this. It's hard! I've tried solving it analytically and keep getting stuck. PM'd for help/hint, so I don't spoil anything here.

Oh, sorry if I missed it. Patreon DM is the best way to make sure I see it and respond, email is second best to that, but due to the number of incoming messages, I cannot respond to all. I’ll search through my email and respond to you there.

I sure wish there was some way to contact you Grant. I have tried a number of times to contact (FaceBook, email, comments etc) and explain a full 3D visualization of W=e^S where W and S are complex but you don't respond so I assume you are either not seeing them or understanding my possibly poor descriptions. This visualization would be perfect for your next attack on 'e'. I assume you have my email and could respond there or maybe just acknowledge here having seen, understood, and considered my past comments. That would be greatly appreciated. Nevertheless I am sure whatever you come up with will be great and I am looking forward to seeing it. Take care.

Oooh, 3blue1brown + Numberphile, can't wait to see that happen! Next: Mathologer :)

Support you fully, and really appreciate your effort in putting the videos together. I am seeing many things very intuitively thanks to you.

As a programmer I fully understand this point: If a big project necessitating a lot of research and production is going to take more than a month, there's no pressure against that.

Grant, explaining math in person? That will be awesome

Also agree with the comment I saw in the previous post, when I make a pledge I don't like calculating how much I want to pledge divided by how many videos I think are made on average per month, I just set the first number for my pledge and set once per month max. Patreon could offer both options to pledgers but that -might- create too much complexity for rewards.

Sam

Glad we're going to per month. I've seen other educational YouTube creators do the same. It makes my Patreon allocation more predictable and consistent especially since I'm supporting a lot of creators.

Sam

Thanks for the heads up Grant. I was one of those who had voted on the per video, but without much conviction, as you have realized - I am happy to support you similarly with the per month model. I enjoy your videos - they are very educational, and quite brilliant! Keep up the good work

Not tossed aside at all! It is true that other topics keep bubbling above it, but if I don’t start publishing probability material in...say...4 months, feel free to chastise me as you see fit. There are just some projects where it’s very easy to scope out the final result, and others that are clouded with ambiguity around target audience and goals.

Thanks Grant! I appreciate all the work you do. I know you've probably tossed it to the side at this point, but we'd all enjoy whatever you can salvage from the probability project. :)
