From Matt:
August 2024
It’s been an equally busy, but somewhat more varied month than the last couple::
I got to spend a nice day on the beach celebrating a friend’s 40th birthday one weekend
Saw The Late Show with Stephen Colbert live on Monday and Tuesday the week they were in town
Then I got to do Improvised Shakespeare with Steve Waltien (and Kevin Sciretta and Peter Gwinn and Beth Melewski; Tavern All-Stars!) while Steve was in town for the Colbert writing team
I signed up for the Hot Chocolate 5K in couple of months, so I need to start training as I’ve been pretty sedentary for the last few months
I keep thinking I may sign up for some more classes (art, writing, something?). I dunno just yet…
Audio:
Mostly just music. Lots of City Pop DJs on YouTube now that fill the background of my workday. Also listening/watching lots of YouTubers (again in the background) going to toy shows, antique markets, and the like.
TV/Movies/Web stuff:
Decided to go see Deadpool and Wolverine. I like superhero stuff , but Deadpool has never been my favorite. I saw the first film streaming at some point, but dammit if High Jackman didn’t get my ass into the theater. It’s pretty enjoyable. That prompted me to finally watch all of X-Men ‘97 and the first few eps of Batman: Caped Crusader. The pace of X-Men is uneven but there’s some good stuff. Enjoying Batman, but as a fan of the old Bruce Timm Animated series there is always a bit of why are we doing this again? But it’s undeniably cool so far.
Games:
Basically in the endgame of Moonstone Island now. I’m not a “decorate my house” person, so there tends to be a steep drop off in my interest once I’ve solved the initial puzzle of “How do I upgrade and become more efficient?” That’s not to say it’s inherently good or bad; just that the cozy genre isn’t a perfect fit for me. Looking forward to Echoes of Wisdom.
Food:
Got to try a few different restaurants this month. Went to Gather in Lincoln Square with some friends. Recommend. Jessye and I went to mfk. and Yardbird. Yardbird was great, but if you’re in Chicago (or visiting) don’t miss mfk.

From Adal:
Jemma and I had the best time in Japan! This time around we got to pop over to Kyoto and Osaka as well as hit up some of our favorite places again in Tokyo. We ended up buying 2 suitcases (thank you Don Quijote) to bring back all the shit we (I) bought, which was mostly the byproduct of me becoming infatuated this time around with the insane gachapons available. My favorite being animals that are weighing themselves. I also brought back way too many Smiski figures. Jemma and I are writing up a document with all our favorite things we did if you ever want a copy for an upcoming trip.
Here’s what I consumed in August. Let me know if you’ve enjoyed anything recently that I should check out!
TV:
Mr. Throwback - Flower herself (Brooke Breit) pops up in several episodes and absolutely crushes!
RuPaul’s Global All-Stars
English Teacher
Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Bears
Receivers
Untold: The Murder of Air McNair
Movies:
Singin’ In the Rain - I’d never seen this before so Jemma insisted I finally watch and I adored it. Way funnier than I thought it would be and I’m now interested in checking out all of Donald O’Connor’s work
Adam Sandler: Love You
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
The Marvels
Other Stuffs:
In Japan I listened to Taeko Onuki on repeat for most of the trip. If you haven’t heard her song 4:00 A.M. then you should remedy that now. Let it be the soundtrack to the next walk you take. Since being back home I’ve listened to some Alice in Chains while cleaning and have been loving Magdalena Bay’s album Imaginal Disk. Also you better believe I’m absolutely CHUFFED about the Oasis reunion. I saw them live on their final tour and am trying to scramble and figure out how/when I can see them next year. Rock N’ Roll (Britpop) is back!
Enjoying playing Peglin on Switch. As a big fan of Peggle, this scratches that itch.
Saw the Back to the Future musical and it was better than I anticipated. All the Delorean effects were pretty magical
Went to Rita’s Italian Ice a few times for a raspberry gelati. Similar to Wawa, I’d never heard of this place in my life until Jemma pointed out there was one near us and it’s apparently an east coast staple. I’m addicted.
Played more Blood On the Clock Tower - always a blast.
Listening to the podcast Sixteenth Minute (Of Fame)
Recently guested on two podcasts I always have a great time on: 1. My Cabbages: An Avatar Podcast (talking about Legend of Korra s1 e12) 2. TV & Movie Trivia Pod (talking Beetlejuice)
Hey Riddle Riddle has a bunch of upcoming live shows including Boston (only 15 tickets left!) on October 3rd, Washington DC on October 5th, and NYC on October 6th. We’ll also be on JoCo Cruise next year, March 2nd to March 9th!

Arnie - I love seeing these updates knowing how much of a Blankie you are! I want you all to be on BC so bad. I think you would be amazing. Also, I always love seeing Adventure Time on your list. It's maybe my favorite show of all time. Adal - I also recently watched Singin' in the Rain and I COULD NOT believe how fucking good and funny it is. It was always built up as this pilar of cinema and I shrugged it off. No one built it up enough. That movie is incredible. So funny. So good.
Jesse Goldsmith - Messy Ghostmeat
2024-09-09 04:29:20 +0000 UTCAs an English teacher, I should probably watch English Teacher…Thanks for the updates, y’all.

2024-09-08 06:13:39 +0000 UTCComing up with ideas for new Matt Young hobbies and chuckled a little imagining him crocheting Wobbles. It’s feels wholesome and adorable, but I’m not sure if blends with his other interests.
