New Video Script - Internet's effect on the Brain

Comments

I almost completely cut out social media, unless using it for a singular purpose with a defined goal. If I regret the time spent browsing online every time for years now it's not going to suddenly feel satisfying tomorrow. I reframed my view of the internet. It is a tool first. I greatly enjoyed the discussion this month between Sam Harris and internet ethicist Tristan Harris on Sam's podcast Waking Up. The internet is literally designed to take your time by encouraging you to spend more and more time using a product/service, like Instagram. The people designing these user interfaces are trying to make them as compelling as possible. They aren't concerned with your quality of life from using their product. The make money from more time seeing those lovely ads. Or a service like Netflix which knows more time spent on site by a person directly correlates to less likelihood they cancel their subscription. If you waste an hour of your day through their product they win. I'm not comfortable losing that hour again and again. I personally feel a lot better when I consciously decide to leave the phone in my pocket when that desire to check arises. It feeds on itself positively! As I say no saying no becomes the natural thing to do. It is no longer so much saying no but not even presenting the question. "I have free time... Lets check Reddit!" But now Reddit and Twitter are replaced by things I know will leave me satisfied like biking and reading. The internet has sometimes made me compelled to the point where I feel comfortable calling it an internet addiction. I can't even understand why I let it become such a part of my life except as an addiction. It's the same empty calling I recognize from a few years of alcoholism.
