Swordtember Day 29 - Midas

Aurelian Avarice

Weapon (Longsword), very rare (requires attunement)
Aurelian Avarice is a cursed sword made from the stolen right arm of Count Auros. Count Auros was a low-ranking nobleman who governed a small territory in the southern valley of Azalisa a hundred years ago. The story said that the count desperately needed funds to develop his struggling territory, so in his desperation, he challenged an Archfey to a game of dice and unexpectedly won. As a reward, he asked for the ability to turn anything into gold, and as agreed upon, the Archfey granted his wishes. But, suspecting the count for cheating, the Archfey put a twist on the ability. When the delighted count uses his ability to build his territory and make his people prosper, greed starts to grow inside him. The ability becomes an out-of-control curse that turns everything that touches the man’s body into gold. In the end, the count is trapped inside his underground vault alone, restrained by his lavish attire, turning his riches into his own tomb. Although he’s dead now, the curse still plagued his body, and this right arm can turn creatures that come in contact with it into gold.

You have a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. When you reduce a creature's hit points to 0, you can use your reaction to magically petrify its body. The creature is stabilized but remains unconscious while being petrified until freed by the greater restoration spell or other magic.
Aura of Greed. As an action, you can cast the Incite Greed spell without spending a spell slot and using the sword as the material component. When you cast the spell this way, the spell affects all creatures within range. You can choose any number of creatures and give them an advantage on the saving throw against the spell. When you hit a creature affected by the Incite Greed spell with this weapon, they have a disadvantage on their saving throw on their next saving throw. Once you use this ability, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
Gilded Touch. When you hit a target with this weapon, you can attempt to turn them into gold as a bonus action. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw against being magically petrified. On a failed save, the creature begins to turn to gold and is restrained. It must repeat the saving throw at the end of its next turn. On a success, the effect ends. On a failure, the creature is petrified until freed by the greater restoration spell or other magic.
You can use the Gilded Touch ability safely a number of times equal to your Constitution modifier. You regain expended uses when you finish a long rest. You can use the ability more than your Constitution modifier; however, every time you use this ability, you also have to roll a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or suffer 1 point of Gilded Curse on a failed to save. Each point of the curses causes your body to be petrified into gold, starting from the arm holding the sword. On 1 point of the curse, you can’t let go of the sword, and you have a disadvantage on skill checks that require you to use your hands. On 2 points of the curse, you gain +2 to your AC, but you have a disadvantage on your attack rolls. On 3 points of the curse, you become fully petrified until freed by the greater restoration spell or other magic.

I love that you implemented a way for the wielder to "get greedy" with overusing its ability. That sells the theme to me the most and means that the most likely places to find this weapon are hidden away for nobody to use or in the hands of the last unlucky bastard to overuse it's power.

This is such a cool idea!
