Swordtember Day 23 - Ambivalent

Comedy and Tragedy

Weapon (shortswords), rare (requires attunement)

The swords known as "Comedy and Tragedy" were the masterwork of Esurienta, a hag whose theater in the Fey Realm was whispered about in fearful tones across all realms. The theater, a place where the line between performance and reality was indistinguishably blurred, was notorious for trapping the emotions of its audience, leaving them as mere husks of their former selves. Esurienta forged the swords from the potent emotional residue, each blade embodying the extreme emotions that were once forcefully extracted from the souls of unsuspecting theatergoers. These twin shortswords, one adorned with a grinning mask and the other with a weeping visage, are said to embody the dual nature of emotions.

When you attune to one of these swords, you are also attuned to the other, using only one of your attunement slots.

Each sword has 3 charges and regains all expended charges daily at dawn.

Comedy’s Cackle. When you hit a creature with Comedy, you can expend 1 charge to attempt to send the target into a fit of uncontrollable laughter. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or fall prone, becoming unable to stand due to the overwhelming mirth for 1 minute. The creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If you roll a 20 on an attack roll using Comedy, this effect activates without expending a charge.

Tragedy’s Tears. When you hit a creature with Tragedy, you can expend 1 charge to attempt to drown the target in a wave of sorrow. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or becoming blinded by its tears for 1 minute. The creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If you roll a 20 on an attack roll using Tragedy, this effect activates without expending a charge.

Emotional Turmoil. If a creature is under the effects of both Comedy’s Cackle and Tragedy’s Tears, they are also subjected to a storm of conflicting emotions. At the start of each of its turns, roll a d6 and apply the corresponding effect:

  1. Anger. The creature uses its action to make a melee attack against a random creature it can reach.
  2. Despair. The creature does nothing on its turn.
  3. Fear. The creature uses its action to Dash away from you by the safest available route.
  4. Joy. The creature can’t take any harmful action against other creatures.
  5. Disgust. The creature uses its action to Drop whatever it is holding or one random item it carries.
  6. Surprise. The creature, startled by the last sound it heard before its turn, uses its action to throw whatever it is holding in the direction of that sound. If it is not holding anything, it uses its action to dash away from the direction of that sound.

The creature can make a single DC 15 Wisdom saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending all effects on itself on a success.

Oh that's true. I think I changed the effect for comedy and tragedy so much that i forgot to adjust the table for emotional turmoil (originally the effect wasn't blinded). let me tweak that again in a moment.

I love the Comedy and Tragedy idea here, you could even make both blades sentient and that writes itself with all the theatrics you could get up to. The only thing I noticed, the "Joy" and "Surprise" effects of "Emotional Turmoil" don't seem to do anything as the target would be Blinded, blinded already gives advantage on attacks against them and because they're blinded they can't see anything to be surprised of.

Yeah, it jusy that i cant get those name out of my head. "Comedy and Tragedy" is just too perfect for them and rhymes nicely too. I couldnt find other alternative that fits better.

It's sad the names start with different letters but other then that I love the design and the concept
