Speartember Day 17 - Curse
Weapon (glaive), very rare (requires attunement)
—--------------------
This ornate scythe was originally named Faithful Fortune and was forged by followers of Ergatis, the Goddess of Forge and Fortune, for their Gilded Sentinels—the temple guards who protected the Grand Forge. The weapon was blessed by the goddess with the power to influence luck, guiding others toward better outcomes. However, when the Grand Forge fell during the First Chaos Insurgency, most of its enchanted artifacts, including those wielded by the fallen Gilded Sentinels, were either buried in the ruins or looted in the aftermath.
Fearing that these items might be used against mortals, Ergatis used her waning influence over the material realm to either seal or curse many of them. The scythe eventually known as a different name as a result of her curse. While it still retains its power to affect luck, it now also brings misfortune to all around it, including its wielder.
—---------------------
You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
Karma Tokens. The scythe's power is represented by Karma Tokens—magical gold coins that manifest under certain conditions. You gain 1 Karma Token whenever you fail a saving throw or an ability check. If you roll a natural 1 or 20 on an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, you gain 1d4 + 1 Karma Tokens instead.
Additionally, after finishing a long rest, roll a number of d20 equal to your proficiency bonus. For each roll of 10 or lower, you gain 1 Karma Token. The maximum number of Karma Tokens you can hold is five times your proficiency bonus. Excess tokens vanish.
Misfortune Bringer You can spend Karma Tokens to invoke curses on creatures within 60 feet. You must be wielding the scythe to activate these curses.
Fickle Fortune (Reaction): When a creature within 60 feet rolls a natural 20 on an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, you can use your reaction and spend 5 Karma Tokens to force them to reroll the die and use the new result.
Jinxed (Reaction): When a creature within 60 feet makes an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw with advantage, you can use your reaction and spend 3 Karma Tokens to turn it into disadvantage, forcing the creature to use the lower roll. You can’t use this feature if the target roll a natural 20 on the initial roll.
Double Down (Reaction): When a creature within 60 feet makes an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw with disadvantage, you can use your reaction and spend 2 Karma Tokens to reroll one of the dice, forcing the creature to take the lower result. Because, when it rains, it pours.
Curse of Misfortune. While attuned to the scythe, you are cursed with an aura of misfortune that affects both you and creatures within 10 feet. No creature, including yourself, can make a roll with advantage while within this area. However, this curse also feeds off your growing addiction to risk, making you crave gambling, taking unnecessary risk, and pushing your luck in dangerous situations.
You may spend 1 Karma Token (no action required) to suppress this curse until the start of your next turn, allowing creatures within 10 feet to roll with advantage as normal.
--------------------------
Karma Token
Wondrous item, uncommon
This small, golden coin bears intricate engravings of a cat on one side and a skull on the other, but it is imbued with illusion magic that makes it appear as a normal gold coin unless closely inspected. Created from the manifestation of bad luck, the Karma Token channels the forces of fate and misfortune, allowing its bearer to influence the fortunes of those around them.
Bad Luck. As a reaction, when a creature within 10 feet of you makes an ability check or a saving throw, you can touch and spend the Karma Token to impose disadvantage on that roll. The token vanishes after being used.
Blood Money. By marking the Karma Token with your blood, you gain the ability to track its location for the next 24 hours. While the marked token remains within 100 feet of you, you can always determine its distance and direction. You can activate the marked token without physically touching it, imposing its effect on a creature within 5 feet of the token, as long as it remains within 100 feet of you and you can see the target.
