I’m going to split the following tale in to two parts because it’s been so long on the offing and we want to tell the story properly.
Since November last year we have been fighting for the safety of a group of 31 foxes in New York State.
These foxes were taken in by a ‘rescue’ from a fur farm. We were alerted to their situation after being contacted by a friend of one of our board members who had seen the conditions they were living in. They were in dog crates, stacked on top of one another and living in their own filth.
Right from the beginning, SaveAFox and our sister rescues reached out and offered help with their care, kennelling and living conditions - we even offered to place them because these people had never had foxes before; and unfortunately, at every turn we were blocked, ignored, muted and told we didn’t know what we were taking about and that the people who had them could do a better job.
We researched the rescue who had them, who claimed to be a registered 501c3, who claimed to hold USDA licensing and discovered that under all of their aliases, they did not exist in any of those forums. The friend that originally alerted us to the plight of these foxes offered to go in and see what he could find out and gather as much information and evidence as possible on the conditions the foxes were being kept in.
He took photos and some video, they were being kept in a 15 x 15 cement garage and they were not receiving the diet they required nor the necessary space.
It’s been a long process to get to today and it’s been difficult to get anyone to investigate. We called the police, the USDA, the DEC. By Christmas last year, we had almost given up hope of ever seeing these foxes free and safe.
That was until mid February.
More to come....
