We always do our best to be as honest and open with you all as we can, and in that spirit we wanted to let you know that we had to say goodbye to our sweet Plum yesterday.

Earlier this year, we noticed that Plum had an abscess on the right side of his face; we took him to one of our vets, who dutifully drained it. Unfortunately, a month later it was back, so we took him to our other vet who diagnosed a damaged tooth as the source of the problem and the abscess was drained and the tooth extracted and he healed up beautifully. However, the abscess came back again, so again we had it drained and the vet could find no cause in Plum’s mouth for it to keep returning. Unfortunately this time it wasn’t an abscess, it was some kind of deep wound, accompanied by a ferocious appetite that was never satisfied and yet Plum didn’t gain weight. He also stopped being a sweet boy you could handle and pet and was clearly in pain and no longer himself; we consulted with Plum’s sponsors and we told them what we thought it could be, that we thought perhaps he had cancer and unfortunately, yesterday, our vet confirmed our suspicion and we made the very difficult, but ultimately right, decision to help him pass peacefully.

We are devastated but we had to do the right thing for him and we would never see him suffer. He is buried next to his original mate Peaches, and whilst we deal with our sense of loss, we will also keep a close eye on his mate Clementine, to make sure she is coping ok.
