The Hype is real, Gintama at it's best is imo one of the best series out there. It really takes some time to really get going, it pretty much starts out as a gag manga/ gag anime with mostly episodic comedy with some action here and there ( thinking about it, that's kind of like Konosuba in that regard, well with a completely different setting and a different kind of Humor) and comedy is always a matter of taste, some like it others don't. Nevertheless once it gets to the actual story arcs and especially the serious arcs you are in for a real treat and I doubt many that sat through the anime up to that point and actually have seen them would say they aren't great. Some information about the setting, it's not really spoilers, you find out just about everything I am about to tell you in the first few episodes. BTW the MC's name is Gintoki, Sakata Gintoki. The setting is more or less that Aliens have come to earth and invaded/colonized it during Japan's Edo period. Initially there was a great war trying to fend of the Alien invasion and Gintoki was one of the greatest "heroes" of that war. The war was lost, well it was basically Samurai vs. Aliens with technology on a level that makes interstellar travel possible, and at least on the surface now there is peace and coexistence. This is were the anime starts, Gintoki is now running a Yorozuya / Nandemoya business, basically he does everything (from simple odd jobs to pretty dangerous stuff) as long as he is payed.

Those are mostly special openings or funny versions of regular openings with the exception of op 17v4 (it is the last opening of Gintama 2015, but with completely different visuals and it feels like a different opening). First off Gintama is most definitely a shonen anime, the standard battle shonen aren't the only type of shonen anime. Besides that, have you actually watched Gintama ? Yes it has much comedy but the serious arcs are pretty damn serious and emotional and the fights in the serious arcs are hype as hell.

The anime isn't over, the manga ended almost two months ago and the anime is on a break while they are animating the final season, which will probably air sometime 2020.
