Kallen didn't just suddenly start feeling sorry for her mom. Initially she thought that her mom devoted herself to Britannia and her ex-husband just for herself - beeing a weak personality basically. But after seeing her on refrain and listening to what she said while hallucinating she understood that her mom did this just to be there for her kids - Kallen and Naoto.
