I got it! An idea on how to (very slightly) fix the movie! Make the main character obsessed with winning. Think about it, then it would explain why he avoided damage in the demolition derby, why he didn't just throw the race with Speedy Fireball, and could even play into his character arc of maturing and learning when to put others ahead of himself. Like what they should have done in Alpha and Omega 3
