Thrill as absolutely NOTHING happens!

Isle of Dogs Review

Comments

I actually really liked ISLE OF DOGS. I thought the cinematography and visual effects were incredible. And when I watched it I thought the story was pretty good too. But after watching your review I'm wondering why The Military bothered weaponizing some of the dogs, like giving then the ability to spit their teeth out like they were shooting bullets if they were just going to condemn all dogs to that island?

Chucky Cheese

They DIDN'T do anything. What was said that brought Spots to tears? Nothing that WE can hear, so what's the point? Why bother granting the dogs the ability to understand what Atari's saying while leaving US completely out of the loop? It's not about me not knowing Japanese, it's about the audience at large not knowing ANYTHING about what just transpired. Also, I'm not "forgetting" that people love dogs. I'm the one yelling at the Air-stended Buddiverse for insisting that humanity only loves dogs because of some magical mcguffin that has nothing to do with love. All I'm doing is trying to run with the movie's badly explained premise, I.E. the Kobayashis waged war against dogs a thousand years ago, they've remained in power for all that time (it's VERY hard for me to believe that they were overthrown, and one of their descendants just happens to wield that kind of power again centuries later and he just happens to share that same hatred), and the same kind of public relations that were employed that made the people not want to protest the Kobayashis anti-dog campaign (save for a single boy samurai) would HAVE to be ingrained into every part of life over the centuries. Normalizing hate on that kind of a scale should have lead to the dogs' destruction eons ago. This entire dog flu plot point doesn't make any sense.

Actually yes, Atari can understand Spot. In the hospital flashback where you were quick to say they don't do anything, Atari and Spot were both given devices that allow them to understand each other. I don't know 100% if Atari can understand all dogs (But from the way he acts, he probably can), but he and Spot understand each other completely. The reason Spot is crying is moreso because he can actually fully understand Atari than what the boy is saying. During Atari's speech he says several times "I understand you" but you seem pretty keen on muting that so you could voice your complaint about not understanding Japanese. Also you keep complaining about Kobayashi's plan while forgetting: People love dogs. If this senator goes around killing dogs, people are going to overthrow him. His family is not the entirety of Japan. He needed a reason to scare people into allowing him to isolate the dogs. That's why he made the dog flu and why he's been working hard to cover up the idea of a cure.

Had Anderson made a move simply set in Japan, I wouldn't have called him out. What he did was exploitative. And "western" isn't a culture, so it can't be appropriated.

Raven Fox

I have a feeling Wes Anderson has no idea how real human conversations go. He can only do monologues where several characters patiently wait for the other to finish their 5 minute life story in excruciating detail. I do disagree with Raven though about "cultural appropriation" because really if we went by that, no country would be allowed to make movies that take place outside their country... including Japan. We have plenty anime that stars western characters, then we could not have gotten those either?

How are indeed, ALL the dogs not dead immediately upon arriving, if they needed a key to open their cages? And true, why is the evil mayor not just killing the dogs? Y'd think he would not care about popularity loss due to killing puppies since he is basically a mayor for life dictator... Honestly, I would have found it funnier if the movie ended revealing the Kobayashi Maru family (why with the weird references., Wes..?) was actually just puppets with cats operating them from the inside. Btw, you did not mention in the review but the scientist lady is not just voiced by Yoko Ono, she IS called Yoko Ono in the movie... WTF?!?

Heeey, I see you got Kingdom Dinobot there replacing the... I forgot if you had the MP one or the third party MP sized one. Really love that toy. I still like and have kept the Henkei one, but this one has a far better, bulkier look in robot mode. The thighs becoming chest halves with the raptor head in the middle is such a clever design. Btw, hope you managed to grab the Ravage set for PulseCon, for once an exclusive did not sell out in hours (or not even days)!

Glad I am not the only one who considers this thing style over substance. Wes Anderson I feel is the director art cinema snobs like to praise because of his style, but I have seen many of his movies like Grand Budapest Hotel or Fantastic Mr Fox and I just found them... boring. Yes there are quirky characters and weird visuals, but nothing interesting is ever done with them. If you tell the plot of these movies in words, you realize how barebones the plots are. And the visuals... same as in Fantastic Mr Fox the dogs look like stuffed animals are about as expressive, too, the dead eyed stares are creepy.

Good thing I never watched this so I have no emotional investment in it. I always though Wes Anderson movies were weird ever since I saw his Fantastic Mr. Fox adaptation.

Grace Starkes

I never saw this film so I have no previous opinion. I agree with both Bob and Raven

I'm pretty sure the haikus used in the film work in the original Japanese due to the amount of syllables.

Verdant Range

I like to have a movie or TV show playing in the background as I'm rendering my videos, and while I was working on THIS one, I was watching one of the Robot Chicken DC specials, and... yeah. Robot Chicken's animation is superior to this by a LONG SHOT.

Bobsheaux

oh good, I was curious about this movie but wasn't interested enough to actually look into it. Okay, so, want to get this out there. I love stop motion. One of my favorite movies is stop motion. But this? Robot Chicken looks better animated. And somehow less like toys.
