Chapter 445: Upcoming Hellish Difficulties
Added 2022-10-29 00:09:19 +0000 UTCSelina looked at Alex solemnly, earlier warm feelings draining away as she thought about the story her brother had told. What heâd said was horrifying, a tale of monsters she could barely imagine, invisible dangers and enemies so powerful, theyâd even given Baelin pause.
And sheâd always looked at the chancellor as invincible.
Then Theresa had told her story: of darkness beneath the earthâs surface, of powers trying to crush her and their friendsâŚbut also of wonder and triumph. Selinaâs eyes were drawn to the mirror-sheen sparkling across Theresaâs blades as they leaned against the door frame to her and Theresaâs bedroom, catching the sunâs rays and the eye. She could see that something was different about them, something had changed.
ChangeâŚ
She frowned at the bed she shared with the huntress; she was growing, but the bed wasnât. With each passing night, it seemed to grow more cramped, leaving her wondering when sheâd find herself on the bedroom floor as Theresa sprawled out and encroached on her side of the bed.
Maybe she could pretend to be asleep and kick her out of the bed a few times, maybe then sheâd go and sleep in Alexâs room.
Theyâd probably like that, and she could end up with her own room and a bed all to herself. Mr. and Mrs. Luâs angry faces appeared in her mind. No, they wouldnât like that idea if they found outâŚ
But then againâher brow furrowed as she schemedâthey wouldnât be mad at her, now would they?
âWhy do you look like youâre hatching evil plans over there?â Her big brother asked.
âI donât know what youâre talking about.â She looked away from the bedroom, blinking innocently.
âOh yes, you do. That innocent look didnât work on me when you were five, and it wonât work on me now.â
âAlex, what are we going to do?â She asked sincerely.
âAnd changing the subject wonât help you either. Face it, Selina, Iâm too clever for yâoh, oh wait youâre serious.â His big, stupid grin dropped. âWhatâs the matter? What are we going to do about what?â
âAbout the Ravener and all those monsters?â She leaned against Claygon. Clutching the hem of her shirt, she took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. âTheyâre going to hurt youâno, all of youâone day.â Her large green eyes looked from Claygon to Alex, then to Theresa and Brutus. âTheyâre going to hurt Khalik or Thundar or Najyah, IsoldeâŚthey keep getting worse, donât they?â
âYes but, we keep getting stronger,â Theresa insisted, patting Brutusâ head as he feasted on the beef strips. She strode across the room, taking her swords in hand, she spun them in her grip. âRemember those Silence-spiders in the cave? My sword couldnât cut through their shells. I couldnât do anything to that damned, Hive-queen. But now?â
She cleaved the air twice with the blades as each caught the sunlight. Selina blinked. Was it a trick of her eyes or did the airâŚlook funny when Theresa slashed it?
âNow I can split Ravener-spawn armour thatâs twice as thick as hers was,â the huntress said firmly. âMaybe three times as thick. Great-grandfatherâs twinblade cuts twice for every slash, and it can also deflect magic. I can defend us.â
There was a scritching noise as Claygon wrote in his notebook. I am stronger. Will protect father. Will protect all.
âYeah, Claygonâs stronger than ever,â Alex agreed. âIâm learning better summoning spells and other ways to defend myself and our friends. Weâll be alright, Selina.â
âWill we?â Selina asked. âEvery time you tell me a story about the Ravener and its monsters, things keep getting worse. More people are dying, more monsters attacking, and theyâre getting stronger too. You said Watchers died, and theyâre so strong!â Her voice rose. âIf they can get killed, why canât you?â
âNot going to happen,â Alex tried to reassure her. âIf anything tries to kill us, weâll just kill âem right back. A lot of things have tried so far, but nothingâs succeeded.â
âIâm worried,â Selina said. âI wish I could helpââ
âDonât even think about that.â Alex pointed at her. âThis isnât some bardâs roadside story where the princess gains the magical power of friendship and destroys the evil dragon.â
âI donât believe in that kind of stuff, Alex,â she said, more than a little offended. âBut you learned spells in like a year and now you can fight. I can do the same thing.â
âListen, the answerâs a hard no,â Alex was unyielding. âYouâre eleven years old. The scariest thing you should have to worry about is whether youâre going to study for a test or not. Thatâs how it is, and thatâs how it should be.â
She frowned. âNo. No, youâre wrong. Thatâs not how it is, Alex. Ever since we left home, monsters have been trying to eat me. Those Silence-spiders, the demons, those clawed monsters at Isoldeâs cousinâs ball. My friends tell me stories all the time about dragons and sea monsters attacking places that theyâre from.â
Selina folded her arms across her chest. âIf Iâm old enough to be eaten by a monster, arenât I old enough to fight back? Arenât I old enough to kill monsters?â
Alex and Theresa looked at each other for a long moment.
Her brother sighed, an uncomfortable look on his face. âIâŚlook. You know whatâs funny? Baelin told me the same thing once.â
âReally?â Selina frowned.
âYeah, remember last year when I brought you with me to the Art of the Wizard in Combat for a bit?â Alex asked. âWell, just before that, Baelin told me this storyâŚwell, the storyâs a bit gruesome so I donât think Iâll be repeating it here.â
âAwwww, I want to hear the story!â
âWell, ask him, then,â Alex spread his hands helplessly. âBut the point is, it involved children facing some pretty grisly fatesâas I said, gruesomeâanyway, after he finished the story, he said something very similar to what you just said. That children can die whether or not they know how to defend themselves. You remember some of those lessons, right?â
âYeah,â Selina said.
âWell, maybe a few more might be in order,â Alex admitted. âNow, I still canât teach you magic yet: Iâm not going against your teachers on that, and you need a good foundation of the theory first.â
âOkay, but what about after?â She pushed.
âWell, after that, weâll see about getting you to the point where you can turn any demon that wants to make a meal out of my sister into ground meat.â His jaw clenched.
âAnd then!â She pushed, leaning forward. âAnd then I can come to Thameland, andââ
âAbsolutely out of the question.â He firmly waved her suggestion away. âAnd you canât blame me for that one because itâs out of my hands. Baelin, Professor Jules and the other administrators of the expedition only let qualified researchers and fighters join. And their standard for who can get in is probably going to be even higher after this latest incident. That wonât include little sisters, Iâm afraid.â
âAh, bah!â She frowned. âMaybe Iâll ask Baelin.â
âHeâll say no.â
âYou donât know that.â
âTrust me, I think I doâŚâ he paused. â...at least I hope so. So! Your lessons on how to defend yourself are going to be restricted to training, and only in proper places.â
âIâm not going to blow up the insula, Alex,â Selina said. âIâm not stupid.â
âI know youâre not,â he said. âYouâre many things, dear little sister, but stupidâs not one of them. But, the thing is, learning magic can go wroâAh! You said the insula! That reminds me of something.â
He looked at Theresa, waving her over to a chair. âHoney, could you come here for a minute? Iâve got something I want to talk about. Something important.â
The huntress paused. âWhatâŚis it?â She frowned. âYouâre not saying that youâre about to go off and do something dangerous all by yourself, are you?â
â...â Alex froze, like a deer caught in lantern-light. âAlrightâŚso I have two important things I want to talk about.â
âAlex!â Selina snapped.
It is okayâŚI will protect, Claygon wrote.
Alex paused again. âOkay, three important things.â
###
âSo, letâs get the parts out of the way that are going to get me yelled at,â Alex sighed, looking at the golem, the huntress and his sister.
Selina watched him closely. Itâd been a long time since sheâd seen him this nervous.
âRight, so thereâs no easy way to say this, Selina, but weâll be going down to the hells for a while,â he said.
âWhat?â She demanded. âWhatâre you talking about?â
She listened as her brother explained how he, Theresa, Claygon, and their friends would be heading to the hells with Baelin to learn to fight demons. Selina wasnât sure which feeling was stronger: fear or jealousy.
âThat sounds dangerousâŚâ she said, when heâd finished. âBut youâll be with Baelin, so that should be okay.â
âYeah, Alex, Iâm not sure why you looked so anxious,â Theresa said.
âYeeeeeah, yeeeeeeaaah, wellâŚthen thereâs the part where I might have to go and uhâŚâ He ran his fingers through his stupid-scraggly looking beard. Selina did not like that beard. âWell, look, I might maybe sort of kinda have to go down to the hells uhâŚwithout Baelinâs help. And uhâŚwithout uhâŚClaygon.â
âWhat?â Theresa and Selina exclaimed as one.
The golem flinched, staring at Alex.
âYesâŚI know, buddy, I know,â the Fool said. âYeah, I know, buddy. The problem is that one of the things I need to do down in the hells needsâŚa subtle approach. Baelin tells me that I wonât be able to bring many of my friends down there with me, and I wonât be able to bring ClaygoâYes, yes I know itâs dangerous, but Iââ
âNo, you have to take Claygon!â Selina pleaded. âHeâs so strong, and heâs saved all of us!â
âYes, but if I need subtlety, then thatâs the one thing that Claygon doesnât have. I canât exactly go somewhere without you being noticed, buddy. And thatâs not all,â Alex said grimly. âItâd have to be a small team that comes with me, and theyâd have to be people that could go unnoticed.â
He scratched his scraggly beard. âAndâIâve been giving it some thoughtâif I go alone, Iâd feel a lot better.â
âAlex, you canât defend yourself as well as youâd need to,â Theresa insisted. âYou need someone at your side.â
âI did think of that, you know,â he said. âSeems a bit foolish to train myself in all these group tactics just to muck it all up by going to hell by myself. But, you all mean the world to meââ He looked at the golem, the young woman and growing girl seriously. ââand so does the cabal. Hells, Iâd feel like utter garbage if I got Grimloch killed on some dangerous mission. This isnât like when we fight in Thameland, where we can just blow up all of our problems. It might involve sneaking and all that, possibly not bringing our full power to bear.â
He sighed. âBut I was thinking about my summoned monsters. They fight by my side, they can appear out of nowhere and theyâre expendable. Of course, Iâve got to summon them and I might not always have enough time for that. SoâŚI thought, what if I get some people that were, oh by the Traveller, this sounds awful: expendable? Folk that I wouldnât mind working with butâif something happenedâI wouldnât be getting half of my friends killed. Maybe mercenaries or something. I donât know.â
Silence hung in the air.
âAlex, Iâm not sure thatâs the best idea,â Theresa said. âI understand you want to protect us, but the people you can rely on most to watch your backâŚwell, thatâs us.â
âYeah, you should all go together, itâd be safer,â Selina insisted.
âWell, thatâs the rough part, I canât take everyone with me, so anyone that comes along could be in for a rough time of it. Weâd be dealing with more danger than weâd normally have to since thereâd be less of us. ItâŚjust doesnât sit right with me.â
Theresa put her hand on his. âDonât worry, weâll figure it out together.â
He smiled. âThank you.â
âGross,â Selina wrinkled her nose. âNow you have me super scared about what the third thing is. Are you going to tell us that you have to be demon food? Everything youâve already said is awful.â
âWell, this oneâs a bit different,â his eyes twinkled as they scanned the room, his mouth took on a wistful smile. âWhat would you say if I wanted to get us out of here?â
âLike go and get some lunch?â Selina asked. âI am getting hungry.â
âNo, I mean, out of this apartmentâŚout of the insula,â he said. âIâm asking if you guys would be open to anâŚupgrade in our living arrangements. Not right away, but soon. Iâm asking if you might like living in our own place.â

Author's Note
Hello ten cool fools, almighty chosen, wise sages, and mighty champions! Thank you for your support!
Selina lowkey thinking of a plan that'd both destroy Alex and Theresa but also make them the happiest people in the world.
Also, fun fact, in old versions of D&D, hirelings were much more of a thing. And sometimes that makes sense. I think it'd really fit a real fantasy world where you'd want some extra back up on certain dungeon raids.
Here we kinda explore that a little.
Alrighty, folks, cya tomorrow!

Also, finally, I've been waiting to see what kind of place they'd get for themselves! But it makes me wonder, what's the status of his money making schemes? I haven't really heard anything about them yet... At all. Is he selling potions? Making cool magical trinkets? What's he doing beyond working at Shale's?
