The sky is filled with so much smoke, it's impossible to tell whether it's night or day. We've been stuck in these trenches for what feels like months. Perhaps it has been. We lost Ronnie the other night. Xmas troops caught him running between machine gun nests and cut him down. He screamed so loud that Sarge had to put him down or else risk giving away more positions. If this letter finds you, just know that you are always in my thoughts. I hope the boys are treating you well, and tell them I said they need to help you more around the house. I'll be home soon. My only worry is what sort of man will be unleashed from this hell. Surely he can't be the same one who entered.
