In retrospect this helps us feel the time elapsing for Carla, because her patience-period is spread over two strips. It's also a good segue between two interactions taking place in the same classroom. Earlier in this sequence we had a somewhat differently presented segue from Leslie-to-class to Becky and then the separate Becky/Leslie and Ruth/Jennifer interactions. There's a lot of comics-cinema technique at work to pack all these arcs into a few strips.
