One of several things I like about this one is that it adds to the world-building a bit. We鈥檝e known (arguably since the first episode when we first saw them, but certainly by session 4 (the one with the sea rat environmentalists) that there are hyperspace gates, and now we know that one of the costs to getting them up and running was a huge explosion on the moon (which created the kid as a side-effect).
Other shows have employed hyperspace (Star Wars, Doctor Who), or other sorts of large scale future tech (Star Trek warp drive, etc) but rarely have I seen reference to the learning curve to getting those things up and running, nor the cost in accidents discussed. I do like me some good world building.
