Giant monsters are more of the 50s nuclear age/mad science B movie tropes, water world and mad max are an early post climate change apocalypse, the fallout universe adopts the B movie tropes mostly to make fun of them thus the giant stuff in the comics, because predicting how bad the damage for something of this scale is hard and ecology movies are for documentaries, making a movie about a nuclear winter would be depressing and probably boring

Giant "whatever" is a meme for post apocalyptic life because early experiments with radiation demonstrated things going to much larger sizes. That said, I don't think it was anywhere near *this* much larger. I kind of recall reading that some simple life such as plants grew to nearly double the normal size. I'm not the expert on exactly how things scale like Dan is, but I'm pretty sure that this roach is a bit more than double the normal size. But I'm not sure I've ever seen a fantasy work that constrained themselves to the size changes actually seen in those experiments. I don't know that I've seen much in the way of post environmental collapse apocalypse depictions. Probably Water World and some of the Mad Max movies could fall into that category, but I don't recall the giant bugs in those.

You know, I've heard that before. But I've never gotten a good answer on "how are these chemical reactions that look like fire not fire?" For what it's worth, I tend to disregard the line of thinking that something isn't fire just because oxygen isn't involved in the reaction - mostly because fire was defined long before oxygen was identified or even phlogiston was hypothesized. Going back to the original definition, I would go along with "doesn't produce much heat", except for the fact that we're specifically talking about room temperature fire here.

the thing about post apocalypse life is that it should be smaller for a long while rather then larger due to ecosystem collapse and extreme size bugs simply shouldn't work, they couldn't breath for one (no lungs so breathing from the skin doesn't work), they couldn't walk for another (insect legs don't scale) and what would they eat they need completely different organs to digest larger food.

I think she's not hiding out of fear of the roach's fire breath. She was already hiding before it belched fire. Just, you know, tropically poorly so we wouldn't wonder why a rock was thinking that the roach wasn't so fantasy-y. I mean, yeah, there are camera angles that could have shown us both Grace and the roach without requring Grace to appear to be hilariously bad at hiding. But using such a shot would clearly be downright insanity.
