Tedd Video Game Opinions - 017 - HD

EDIT - I forgot Diane-a-chu's rosy cheeks! In case anyone prefers the original without the cheek spots, both versions are attached below ("correct" version has rosy in the name).

EDIT 2 - Actually, there were several Diane mistakes. Wow. My apologies! Corrected in "rosy" version.

So evil (not sarcasm!)

I believe there's a spell in The Witcher games that's used for convincing people of things? I'll get around to playing The Witcher 3 for more than two hours someday.

Probably.

Beyond that, the only thing I know of close to what Tedd's describing is in The Elder Scrolls Oblivion (aka the 4th Skyrim prequel). It's possible to craft your own spells in those games, and NPCs have a disposition towards you.

What I would do was to create a spell that would make them like you as much as it's possible to like you for a few seconds (maybe even just one second? Can't remember), then enter dialogue as quickly as possible.

Which possibly sounds evil, but remember, this is a video game in which you can make anyone love you if you're willing to go through a convoluted conversation mini-game enough times. I know I could have stopped at "this is a video game", but the conversation mini-game existing really makes it feel like, if anything, you're doing them a favor. Their faces would totally get sore making so many exaggerated expressions for the mini-game.

Morality aside (something that should only said casually in reference to fiction), I find wizardly mind tricks more believable than "oh my gosh your hat is amazing I bow to will".

All that said, if there isn't something like this in an actual Star Wars game, I am disappointed. And possibly just revealed that I never made it far in Knights of The Old Republic, either, but maybe not? I wouldn't know (but assume I'm about to find out).

Is this how Lord Tedd got his start?

"All that said, if there isn't something like this in an actual Star Wars game, I am disappointed." Rejoice! You shall not be disappoint this day, for both KotOR and KotOR 2 have Force Persaude and Force Domination (which is just a more powerful version) specifically for use in conversations! And while having an ability called Force Domination sounds bad, you actually get to use it to save lives in kotor 2 when you use it to convince a determined soapboxer to NOT incite a riot. If you only have Persuade, he's strong-willed enough to do it anyway.

If you want to manipulate people, expertise on persuade with high charisma and strong RP ability is more reliable and less likely to blow up in your face.

D&D 5e also has the cantrip (basically, minimal-level spell) Friends. For one minute, you get Advantage on Charisma checks towards a chosen creature (so they're not going to simply view you as friendly, but your attempts to persuade them are more likely to work). But when the spell expires, the creature knows what you did *and instantly becomes hostile to you.* They may attack, they may try to get revenge in other ways. But the consequence isn't just "they know what you did," the rules as written explicitly say that they're going to want to harm you.

Randall Wald

There are a few spells and abilities like that in D&D 5e. Charm Person being the notable one. RAW state that when it ends, the creature knows you charmed it. Suggestion is a slightly more subtle spell, RAW it does not state if the target knows it was magically manipulated, so you could probably use it subtly with role playing to get discounts. And then there is the 3rd Level School of Glamour Bard’s special ability, Enthralling Performance. Perform for a minute, and your targets are charmed for an hour and love you like screaming fans. Afte an hour it wears off and they’re none the wiser they were magically manipulated.

OMG Diane! That is too good.

I've played in a tabletop role-playing game where one of the spells you can get is basically, "Make people like you a lot. Effect lasts for about half an hour depending on die roll. Once the spell wears off, they realize what you did, and probably hate you." I rather like that variant of it. Rather than just having some vague "I did something evil" consequence that doesn't really matter to the game, the generally-disapproved-of nature of the spell has in-world direct consequences.
