Commentary
I wanted George behind the counter at the start of this, but I didn't want him to be working, and I didn't want Justin there because he would have immediately started talking to Nanase and Ellen.
So now we get two panels devoted to the simple idea of "when Justin's not on-panel, everyone should be asking 'where's Justin?'", and establishing that George is not, in fact, on the clock.
I was originally trying to think up reasons Justin could be in the back room, such as being on the phone with some customer for HILARIOUS reasons, but it was all a bit too complicated.
Justin simply getting food next door is much better, and not just because George gets a milkshake out of it.

But he's not working for long, and he's not working for the comic shop. Just for a fellow employee of the comic shop. This means that he's not ringing up customers or answering customers' questions. He's just making sure that would be customers don't walk off with merchandise without paying for it, or worse, raiding the till. He's also making sure they know Justin will be back quite soon with creamy frosty goodness for him and will be able to take care of their purchasing or ordering needs at that time. As such, he's available to talk more freely than if he were working for the store today, right now.. When I first read this comic, my first thought was, "Ah, somebody could be confused on this particular point. I should probably make a helpful clarification, because I understand having been in four of the five sides of this I am aware of." But then I thought, "Nah, it should be clear and I'll just come across as someone who feels they need to point out every obvious thing." Thanks for making me feel like my instincts aren't that far off. (For the curious, the five sides are: 1. George's position. 2. Justin's position. 3. Grace's position. 4. A customer of the store at the time this is going on. 5. The store manager or owner. I've not been in the last of those five positions. As I'm typing this, I'm guessing there are other possible positions that could have opinions on the situation, though I'm only vaguely aware of 6. The store's legal team's position and 7. The store's insurance company's position and am not even able to imagine what others might be. I've not been in those positions, either, and probably not any others I'm not even able to name.
