Commentary

It felt natural to me for Rich's initial reaction to this revelation to be poor.

Part of the inspiration for this was simply that I've listened to a lot of people's experiences playing roleplaying games, and one thing that has come up several times has been favoritism for players who the Game Master was either dating, or interested in dating.

This favoritism could take the form of that player effectively being made the story's main protagonist. The plot revolves around them, the unique gear was created for them, etc.

So while Rich lacks tact in that first panel (and in general), his reaction wasn't out of nowhere. He could easily have been reminded of such things.

Fortunately for everyone at the table, the only reason Nanase's character has this unusual origin is to accommodate her being unfamiliar with everything, and that's simply provided an opportune explanation for Rich's paladin being invested in the party.

I Love it ❤

I AM THE HYPE! Wait, Vegeta would make a terrible paladin... It might work depending how far along his character development he is. Mr. Satan on the other hand would be hilarious! I'd definitely make either strength or constitution his dump stat.

My personal worst was a GM who A) built the whole plot around his buddy from the 2nd edition days's character, essentially having a private session zero just for him when this guy showed up all of four times in two years of weeklyish play, and B) scrapped our somehow successful (in spite of A) Star Wars game because his girlfriend "didn't understand the point of playing an RPG if she couldn't play an elf" (and then C: A again in the ensuing D&D campaign).

There are two kinds of people: those who respond to trauma by wanting to pass it on to others, and those who respond to it by wanting to eliminate it from the world, or at least never allow it to happen to another in their presence.

You don't look like I'd expect the Mark from that game to look today. Sure, it was three decades ago and it's difficult to predict how people will age, but he was in color. ;) I'd guess it was probably a different Mark, but I remember being in a game like that. Except I was less of a player and more of a GM assistant. There was a rough outline of what I was supposed to do to facilitate the story going as they wanted. Of course, it fell into shambles, because players are willful and it takes more than a shill to get them to go the direction the GM wants. If I recall correctly, we deviated from anything that could be directed by that outline on the first gaming session, despite my character being able to do magic when none of the actual players could. It wasn't particularly different from a game without such heavy-handed player control methods that just happened to have a single magic user. The players are either going to be anarchic in their behavior, follow the most charismatic player, follow the most strong willed player, or decide more or less democratically what they're going to do. None of those modes of play will follow the lead of an introvert who is more comfortable typing than talking.

Rich *has* potential. But he got teased and shamed the first time he put it on the line. It's sadly human for people who are damaged in some way to become the sort of people that spread that same damage

Ugh, that brings back a memory of briefly becoming involved in a homebrew campaign run by an acquaintance, in a world where magic was rare but very important, and the GM’s close friend was the only one whose character was allowed to have it.

I like that Rich starts to get excited once he understands the idea. It seems like there's hope for him to be a good player. :)

Huh, I may have to steal this idea for my next homebrew campaign.

I like that Ellen didn't explicitly say what the god wanted to know about Nanase. While that would've given Rich a really good opportunity to show himself to be a rather inept player, that's really not the goal here. Also, he still has enough opportunity to show himself as inept if he really wants to.

YES!!!!!!

Jere

This is actually a really solid player hook
