Who Is Ellen - 70 - HD

An NPC by any other name...

- At egscomics

Commentary

I think a more realistic depiction of this would have much fewer names going through Ellen's mind, and several being repeated, but I felt it would be more fun for there to be a whole mess of names.

And so, for the first time ever in this comic, I abandoned realism in favor of fun.

Meh; they will change all the names and cast random Americans anyhow for the movie version.

David Howe

Six seasons and a movie will never come to fruition will it?

Ethan Cobb

These days there are online "RPG name" generators, but back in the day I used to have actual paper lists of background characters from various fantasy novels, in case I needed a NPC name in a hurry... * Except farmers. farmers were always called "Bob" or, if they were a rich farmer, "Robert." Bob often had a new shovel he was proud of. Robert would have a high quality, possibly magical shovel, of course. This was an "in joke", but as the party that generated that "in joke" wasn't usually the party encountering the farmer, this often led to puzzled expressions.

David Howe

Forrier the Warrior. Mytor the Fighter. Harbaryan the Barbarian. I think we have a full party, though there may be room for Hassan the Assassin.

Some Ed

Moog the Rogue... he's a Warforged originally designed to be part of an artificial orchestra.

Merle Blue

Just say "It's short for a full name that would make your bones melt and your eyes turn to ash in their sockets."

Merle Blue

lol, Marik the Cleric. Like Megan the Vegan.

Daryl Sawyer

I once named a demon (until that moment unnamed) Ix because I thought it looked cool, only to have one of the players crack up because it sounded like I was saying Eeks!

Mark

'Julian, Miles, Ki...' I know the missing name is probibly 'Kira' given the DS9 connection, but my brain first went to 'Kintobor'!

Calvin-Skye

I love the name "Marik the Cleric," but now I also have this image of a shifty guy with a golden rod sending people to the shadow realm

KC

Don't forget Mohg the Rogue

KC

I assume Marik the Cleric was aided by Mizzard the Wizard and Morlock the Warlock? Thank goodness the mayor's brother didn't get involved. The mayor would've said, "This is Mother, my brother". :-)

Dan Merget

Ah, but one of them was entirely occluded and the other only showed 1/4 of the letters. I think that means it's a significant name, but that detail is hidden right now. Much like another thing. That's right, the cleric was Marik Bean. I'm not sure what significance that has, but I'm confident that answer matches my headcanon.

Some Ed

Since "Bean" appears twice in that list, clearly it was the correct choice.

Michael Chui

I seem to recall running a game with an unplanned NPC named Zebalzibebgay, and then later opting to add his brother, Zebazibalgay. That had been good for laughs, but not for game play. If I recall correctly, they did accidentally get a few surprise siblings because I myself could not consistently pronounce them correctly, despite being the idiot who came up with them.

Some Ed

Two of those names are suspiciously close to "Nathaniel Richards". I look forward to learning what Kang the Conquerer wants with the Mayor's chicken.

Kenneth A Graves

There are those who call me... Tim?

wargrunt42

*snickers* Some of those are fun, but would have caused far worse beaches of suspension of disbelief, yes.

Jenora Feuer

Pretty good for naming a character on the fly!
