It was like four-dimensional chess setting things up so Rich could say something like this.
I don't know how many games actually use pickaxes and have mines. Obviously, there's Minecraft, but while it's possible to be without a pickaxe and regret it in that game, it's more the norm to have one than not.
George is referring more to games in which pickaxes are entirely optional items, and you could regret choosing to not bring one somewhere it would be very situationally useful.
The one game I AM aware of where you can optionally carry an otherwise-useless pickaxe around is Skyrim, a game I keep going back to because I find it relaxing, and I can just play it while listening to other things. It's like the equivalent of a relatively high tech fidget toy.
And yes, I have found gold ore veins before, and not had a pickaxe.
Part of me wants to make a character who just dual-wields pickaxes, specializes in enchanting to make them actually function in combat, and whoops I thought of yet another character build to play as I guess I know what I'm doing this weekend.

Whenever I try dual-wielding pickaxes in Skyrim, I end up going "I'm not a speedrunner for crying out loud". Whole mine is cleared out fast enough as it is already when I do wait on the actual mining animation.

2023-01-03 14:33:41 +0000 UTCPickaxes are meant to be wielded two-handed if I'm not mistaken. That said, I do think they're probably lighter than ones standard two-handed war hammer or axe. Just not enough for most non-barbarians to wield them one-handed.

2023-01-03 09:55:20 +0000 UTCIf you're playing Nethack, a pickaxe is pretty much a requirement in the Gnomish Mines levels. And great to use to empty out Croesus' vaults if you find them.

2023-01-03 04:44:34 +0000 UTCWhen it comes to dungeoneering, I'd rather make sure I have an over abundance of rope more than a pick axe. Comes in handy when someone's character accidentally falls down an abandoned mine shaft or into a pit trap.
