Commentary

"Once you're over carry capacity, it becomes ridiculous that you cannot carry more, and you must make every argument for being able to that you can think of."

I don't know if the joke about every adventurer having rope as standard is still relevant, or if I'm even remembering that detail about default equipment in at least one RPG correctly.

If I'm not, then, um... This ISN'T a reference to anything, what are you talking about, this is just a thing with the specific unspecified RPG that they're playing.

"What about a bit of rope? You'll want it, if you haven't got it..."

Foradain

Sometimes you can find two prices for rope, depending on whether it's regular (hemp) rope or fancy lightweight silk rope.

Foradain

Yeah, I've been playing since 1st ed (1977)(those books look centuries old now), and rope always has a price.

Ed Abrams (aka The Superdak)

Hurray! The goblin minion lives! For now! Assuming Rich stabilized him!

Alex Fellman

It's weird the GM said that they couldn't find a listed shop price for rope since I thought it was in the PHB, since it's one of those items that PCs always want to buy. Maybe I'm remembering wrong though

KC

Backpacks of Holding, don't question it.

Wild Card

You say it's a ridiculous amount of rope, but I remember the following conversation: player: ... and I want to buy 200' of rope. GM: You don't have to buy rope. We assume every PC has some rope. player: How much rope? GM: Um, let me check. ... 50' of rope. player: OK, so I want to buy 150' of rope. GM: You won't need the rope. player: I want the rope. How much does it cost? GM: I don't know. It's not listed in the shop price list. We assume every PC has rope. I don't remember where it went after that, but I do remember that the player managed to use all 200' of rope by the end of the adventure, as well as all the 50' lengths that the other characters used, and determined they were going to bring more the next time. How? They tied open every door. They bound every corpse. Many times, they tied torches to ropes and flung them forward to light the hall way ahead of them. I do not remember all of the ways they used rope, but they were many and varied.

Some Ed

There's some perfectly good rope right here!

Michael C.

Having a ton of rope on hand isn't a joke... it's a matter of life and death!

AstroChaos

"Chuck Bronson always had rope!"

Narzain

Every adventurers' backpack is effectively a mini Bag of Holding that shrinks volume but not weight

KC

I understood that reference.

Michael Chui

It was a gag in LotR before RPGs, and LotR never goes out of style

Arcanist Lupus

"What are you gonna use the rope for?" "You and your fuck'n rope!"

wargrunt42

Personally, every DnD adventure I go on, people carry a ridiculous amount of rope, so I'd say it's definitely relevant.
