Now we know!

And knowing is a fourth of the battle! It used to be half, but that was before social media.

I actually had considered "Rhoda is simply bad at bowling" being the case, but I didn't like that as much as whatever this is.

This is more relatable to me than being bad at bowling, for I am, of course, fantastic at it.

I haven't bowled in over a decade, and I can't remember how well I used to do, but I assume I averaged a score of three hundred and five on the regular.

Nice spare!

In bowling, you get two chances to knock all ten pins over per turn. If you finish knocking them over in the first chance, that's a strike, and your turn is over. In the second, that's a spare.

I'm not planning to explain all of bowling. That would take a bit, and I'd probably get something wrong. I wanted to cover what the heck a spare is, though, as I'm boldly assuming fewer than 100% of readers know that.

Honestly, I'm not sure what percentage of readers to expect. From my own personal experiences, it feels like everyone should know, but globally, and in 2024? I think the most reasonable guess I can make is to simply say I don't know what a reasonable guess would be.

I think i've only bowled once with a professional bowler. That person's the only person I ever bowled with who didn't get a gutterball at least once during the games they played with me. So just because someone is good doesn't mean they're not ever going to get a gutterball. I think I've previously admitted that 13 of the last 15 balls I rolled down a lane were gutterballs. So I'm certainly not also an exception to that. Even before that event, they were something I'd get from time to time. I think I even got one during the best game I ever bowled.

Nuh-uh! It's 450! In five-pin bowling. 🤔How would Diane and Lucy fare if they were playing a different type of bowling than they're used to?

Keja

I know that from The Simpsons!

For the benefit of readers who are not familiar with how bowling is scored, I will note that you omitted to mention that the highest mathematically-possible score is exactly 300.

Also there is probably a substantial difference between knowing what a spare means, and knowing how it is scored. What with bowling almost always being automatically scored, it is very easy to play many many games of casual friendly bowling without having much of an idea of how the numbers work. Especially since they're a bit complicated and non-obvious.

Nice bowling comic frame! Clearly, for maximum artist physics nonsense, we need to ask for a sketchbook of an AU where they went on a horseback polo date instead 😂

Heh, there's probably a major difference between having bowled enough to have internalized spare as a bowling term, and knowing what a spare means without reference 😹 y'know, like me having internalized that eagles and birdies are golf terms, but needing to Google to determine that eagles are better than birdies. And, yep, Google also confirms that the golfing club which coined both terms did so because eagles tend to be larger than most birds.

This sounds like Yang saying to Blake:You have cat ears!! So adorably awkward. Can’t wait to see the main story continue Jay and Susan’s love story.
