When I’m jumping right into painting, like with this one, I like to add the full value range to the piece early on, (darkest darks and lightest lights) that way everything is balanced. Also it helps to save time, because I can just use them as colour swatches for colour picking instead of going to the colour picker constantly 😂

I'm figuring out rendering myself right now but I usually save highlights for the end. Is it just to help you plan your lighting for the rest of the piece?
