Promo Illustrations Full Process

Here are a couple process GIFs for the 2 latest client illustrations I've finished for LootTavern!

Is there anything in these paintings that you would like to see me break down in another post? Feel free to comment any thoughts or suggestions :D

Hey! I had a bit of pose reference, but I generally use that just as ideas for the thumbnails, but then change up the reference and invent the specifics of the pose. As you see in the process for the 1st one, i lay in the whole body construction first with simple forms to get the foreshortening right for both characters, and then add the costumes above that, so it's not too overwhelming to come up with everything at once. As for lighting in complex scenes, I try to simplify it as much as possible - since you have multiple figures, breaking each of them down into light and dark shapes will tend to make a weak and convoluted read, which is why it's a good idea to have some of them be in shadow. Ruan Jias work is a really good example of this, he tends to put the foreground characters fully in shadow (that way completely grouping the silhouette) and have some of the midground in direct light. That way there's a good distribution of detail (in this case that would be the smaller light shapes) and there's not too much stuff going on all over the place. Hope that helps!

Do you use references for these dynamic perspective poses? Also, how do you approach to these complex lighting scenes?
