Good thing I am watching this with Sarah and Adam since I won't be able to recognize spencer, the princess, and the writer without Sarah's help. Lol I was prepared for this episode (they mentioned it in their watch party) but dang... I still got misty eyed.

About anime awards: as a few already mentioned, yes, there are. And sometimes these great anime do get their recognition, but I think the results are very... "weird". For example, in this year's awards, for best musical score, Solo Leveling (popular action wish-fulfillment anime of the season) won, even though Evan Call - who composed both Violet Evergarden and Frieren's soundtracks - was a contender in the category for "Frieren". You have not yet seen Frieren, but I would say its soundtrack is a step above even Violet Evergarden's - and you already can tell how brilliant the latter is. There are some things that even when people are ignorant on the subject, they can tell and feel "this is different, this is special". I have seen the anime and read the manga of both Solo Leveling (completed story) and Frieren (still ongoing story), and while I can't tell a track from another in Solo Leveling, I can almost pinpoint the episodes where the tracks from Frieren happen, and listening to the album I get emotional remembering the feeling I had when watching the scenes. Violet Evergarden won the animation categories out of a few animations, but as my rant above shows, I find it criminal that Evan Call did not get any awards for the soundtrack. My wife has trouble relating to animation, and even she got emotional at several points, saying the soundtrack was what hit her. In other words, I would much rather trust forum and Patreon recommendations than the awards if I had to choose a next anime. /rant-over. As for the episode, I can't begin to imagine what it is like to have taken the lives of people, but I think that the most powerful scenes for me were Violet trying to choke herself because she was "burning" so much she couldn't think of another way out, and the "do I deserve to live" interaction. Even with my relatively stupid problems compared to something like war, I sometimes feel despair because I can't do anything to fix what I feel was a mistake. Imagining the weight on the mind of someone who took so many lives, especially a child, is heartbreaking. On the positive side, I always found the message in this episode that "every letter deserves to be delivered" to be weirdly comforting. Being an atheist and very science-minded, and having seen/heard this specific statement several times before, it usually feels very platitudinous, and I was curious as to why this time it felt actually meaningful. And after some thought, I came to the conclusion that this is a perfect example of how good works of art can touch people and even help them understand new things. In the episode, Violet gets reminded of the positive difference in the lives of people she is making by writing and delivering letters - works of art in a way - which convey feelings and connect people. In real life, seeing the struggle of Violet and others trying their hardest to heal and communicate feelings, I was able to better understand the value of certain things that previously were not as evident. I'd never put as much effort into understanding where the communication was failing, as I did in constructing a solid argument. In doing that, I've been able to improve my communication with others. The anime very skillfully - through animation, character development, soundtrack, voice actor performances - delivers to us viewers the message of how important and amazing it is to communicate between ourselves, how a letter filled with compassion can help make a war veteran feel happy to be alive and move on, or an orphan feel they belong to a group after having been abandoned (or worse). Whenever I experience a work of art that changes how I view or experience things, I feel grateful for the artists who put the effort into producing it. Through their insight and work, I have been able to experience emotions and thoughts that I might have never experienced throughout a normal life. I of course also value simple cathartic experiences that donโt necessarily revolutionize my way of life, such as a music concert I enjoy or an expertly crafted underdog story that just repeats the same beats. Art does not have to always aim to be life-changing or life-enhancing, but it is pretty amazing when it does, be it a song, a painting, a book, a movie or an anime. Once again this got very long (โthank you for coming to my TED talkโ), but I am happy to be able to gush about this particular work of art with others who also appreciate how unique it is โ it is a very cathartic experience.

2025-06-21 22:48:09 +0000 UTCI'm hardly qualified to teach japanese since I'm not a native speaker but, from my limited knowledge, the word aishiteru is not or rarely is used in the context of family and is more commonly associated with romantic love. My interpretation is that Gilbert was severely conflicted about that and that was one of the reasons why he'd told Claudia it would be a good idea for him to take her as an employee after the war.

2025-06-21 00:10:00 +0000 UTCYes there are anime awards! from what I gathered, it got an IGN award for Best Animation, a crunchyroll award for the same category, an anime trending award for Best in animation effects and sequences, Best in character design, Best in sceneries and visuals, Drama anime of the year, and Favorite drama. Very deserved awards but tbh I went to see who won Anime of the year in 2019 and I feel like Violet Evergarden deserved it moreโฆ
