This cute little set of 26 shots (each of which is presented in three separate edits for a total of 78 images total), were part of a session involving the experimental lighting we used in the set entitled “Tafaam: Wearing Red, Black, and Jack.”
Here, you get to see the originally intended artistry (Images 1-26). The effect is called “chiaroscuro,” an Italian word for “light and dark,” especially when the darkness obscures details that might distract from the light and its edges (and edginess, as here), allowing one’s imagination to fill in what’s missing.
The other two edits, though, are more revealing (at the request of one of our patrons). In the second run of 26 images (Images 27-52) you get the original color image, slightly adjusted in converting to .jpegs from the original RAW files. And the third run (Images 53-78) is adjusted in the opposite direction from the chiaroscuro technique we intended for these and a subsequent set in which the shadows and stripes of early morning sunlight through slatted window coverings and arrow-backed dining chairs. Those 26 images are decontrasted and brightened a bit so as to reveal what was otherwise concealed.
We’d love to hear which approach you prefer, and perhaps we can apply the same principles to the light/shadow stripes defining Tafaam’s curves and crevices in that future set.
