Nosferatu (2024) - Full Reaction

Well I thought this might be mid-level scary for me, turned out to be MAX! It was nice to be watching LIVE though and feel not so alone but it was pretty intense (as you will see) I am glad I watched the 1922 version first, they actually followed it pretty closely-just added a dash of horrifying and a pinch of "I can't handle this at all"

I like to imagine this is in the same universe as The Witch

On the counterpoint side: I did not think it was very frightening. That's probably because I know the novel from reading it and have watched many kinds of Dracula films ranging from "Nosteratu" (1922) to "Dracula" (1931) to "Billy the Kid Versus Dracula" (1966) etc. etc. There were no horror twists here I haven't seen elsewhere except for adding children. Rather than digress too far on that again, let me just say I found that choice gratuitous and distracting more than frightening. It was the one real misstep by Eggers.

What a great retelling. Eggers gave Ms. Hutter control over her destiny and Orlok's, but did so in a way that did not completely deconstruct the story. I'm really pleased with this version. I have to say Bill Skarsgard did not impress me the way Gary Oldman did in "Bram Stoker's Dracula". He feels entirely suitable to the role but not a character that will be very memorable. Conversely Lily-Rose Depp was outstanding both in her dramatic physicality as she's possessed and in her intensity as she shifts from love to confusion to resolution. I was truly impressed.
