Early-Access Alpha Quake4 0.1.0 (aka Baby Strogg's First Flashlight)

My Nan used to say "small apples are sweet". But, then again, she was never involved in a Strogg invasion. Here's a quick QoL release for Quake 4 with two small changes.

1) You can now toggle the flashlight on and off using the left joystick click.

2) You no longer have a permadeath crash situation looming over your head like some sort of Strogg Sword of Damocles.

Be aware depending how you were killed the view can go a bit wonky. When killed just press any button to be taken back to the quick menu screen.

For Reference here are the usable controls at the moment:

Left Joystick = Move
Right Joystick = Snap Turn
A = Crouch Toggle
B = Jump Right
Right Joystick Up / Down = Switch Weapon
Left Trigger = Run
Left Joystick Click = Toggle Flashlight

Right Grip + Left Joystick Click = Give all guns (Shhhh.... its a secret)

Next release will address the HUD situation.

Comments

It's running well on my quest2, in full French (audio + text) with mod on quake4config and the french.pk4 package.

Hi Collin, I was expecting your feedback. You did not disappoint :-) Nothing I am too worried about there: > Jerkiness I accidently shipped it on 72hz mode. I'll fix that in the next one. > The flashlight doesn't work with the shotgun, but works with the gun and rifle. This is what the original game does. Shotgun doesn't have a mounted flashlight. Only certain guns do. A tactical choice I guess as shotgun is quite overpowered > The shotgun is noticeably off center; I'll be giving Bummser a tool to do a proper alignment job soon. > When pointing the rifle down, I get a targeting reticule. When holding the rifle at face to fire, the reticule disappears. Perhaps its being culled out. I'll take a look > - When outdoors, environments way in the background has an incredible flatness to them, no depth whatsoever. What is weirder is that any smoke coming off these 2-D buildings in the background almost has a 3-D feel to it. Yeah, its a static sky-map. Not entirely sure what to do there other than remove the effects. > - Pressing the left trigger and double-pressing the right grip seems to reload. Just press the right grip. No need for trigger. Not sure if its double tap, don't think so. > Some NPCs were speaking really low until I was almost on top of them. Not sure if this is by design or is a bug. Sound spheres are screwed up across the whole game. Its going to sound a hell of a lot better soon

Tried version 010 and have the following observations: - I simply replaced the apk file through SideQuest. Starting the game for the 1st booted me out to my Quest 'home'; 2nd attempt brought me into the game. - Once into the game, nothing was working (flashlight, guns, firing were not working, but locomotion/turning was). Restarting the game resolved these problems. - Overall, smooth locomotion has a subtle jerkiness motion to it; kind of like it feels 95% smooth, but I 'feel' micro-stutters when moving. I'm hoping for smooth turning at some point in the future. - The flashlight works as advertised, and does bring an extra level of immersion to the overall gameplay. I didn't realize how much detail I was missing around me without the flashlight. The flashlight doesn't work with the shotgun, but works with the gun and rifle. - The shotgun is noticeably off center; like it's way out in front of me compared to the other weapons. - When pointing the rifle down, I get a targeting reticule. When holding the rifle at face to fire, the reticule disappears. - When enemies get too close and 'up in my face', my display seems to black out until I move away from them. - When outdoors, environments way in the background has an incredible flatness to them, no depth whatsoever. What is weirder is that any smoke coming off these 2-D buildings in the background almost has a 3-D feel to it. - I'm looking forward to the HUD fix so I can see my remaining ammo. - Pressing the left trigger and double-pressing the right grip seems to reload. - Loading the game for the first time took 70 seconds, later levels generally took 30 seconds or less. - Playing on Normal/Medium level this time around and had no deaths. WooHoo! - Some NPCs were speaking really low until I was almost on top of them. Not sure if this is by design or is a bug.
