Post 276: A Witches' Halloween, p1

“Hey so, uh, Bianca - what are we doing tonight?” asked Sammi, the Australian shapeshifter, as she finally drifted back over to Emily and me. She’d been bouncing around this “party” all afternoon, blatantly showing off her talents. It made Emily mad, at first; these people, as deep into it as they were already, were not sisters. Our kind was not supposed to display ourselves like this - in broad daylight especially - to the unkindred. I mean, either I or Emily could probably weave some memory charms, like we did at that Evolution swag party, make these girls forget they ever saw Sammi’s ass expand each time it was slapped, or how she just spontaneously grew that wart on her nose, that sixth finger. Yeah, she thought it was a hoot (or “Bloody Bonkers” as she put it), but it made Emily nervous. I didn’t fucking care. What’s the worst that could happen at this point? Who’s going to stop us now?

In fact, it being All Hallow’s Eve I knew the answer: absolutely no one.

“What are we doing tonight? For Halloween?” I drolled, trying to keep the lights around me from flickering. That’d been a little harder, today, as the day went on and we got closer to midnight. The energy just crackled out of my pores, it seemed. “Aren’t you Australian?” I asked.

“Haha yah you cunt!” she laughed, swilling the last of maybe her fourth or fifth drink, whatever it was, but then dropping her voice lower, “But you know what I mean. You’ve felt it too, right? It’s like…I’m bursting.”

“Yeah we can all see that,” Emily cracked, casting a baleful eye at Sammi’s now-ripped-up-the-seams little orange shorts. I couldn’t wait to get out of this ridiculous costume or uniform or whatever either, but I wasn’t about to tear through it in front of a crowd like Sammi’s ass almost had.

“Nooooo, don’t be a dag,” Sammi whined, laughing again, “you know what I mean…” Her eyes flashed, meeting Emily’s, and mine.

I actually felt the shiver. It was exciting, it was. It had happened last year, same thing. Our powers, on the eve of Samhain - which it was, today - had been palpably different. I had been able to do things I’d never done, easier. Last year near midnight we in the woods summoned spirits, communed, brought blood to the streamlets. I used to shiver whenever I thought about it but now, this year - with the new Emergence, and how my powers had grown since joining this Hive - the feeling was already tenfold. And the sun hadn’t even begun to set yet.

I could only imagine what the great mothers were doing, had planned for tonight. They’d been gathering, I’d heard, and already I could sense them preparing for the night. They’d summoned Sammi’s friend Sofia, the young gypsy girl that had helped us with the storm last weekend, to them. The world sisterhood was stronger than it had ever been, ferociously so, and this year’s All-Hallow’s Eve would be a day of reckoning.

At least here in the States, the elections were almost here.

Emily looked at me, I at her. Sammi looked at us both. Emily - she’d been given the lead role in our little three-sister coven, which I still think is fucking ridiculous - finally rolled her eyes and shrugged. “I need to do something, too,” she said, “so…what’s it going to be?”

To that, Sammi clapped and squealed, bouncing up and down in her little white sneakers and tight server’s uniform. “Don’t random cute boys walk the streets out in the dark tonight? Here in America?” she asked, “Knocking on doors, begging for sweeties?”

Sweeties? Did she mean candy lol. I was getting hungry, though…

Emily and I looked at one another, and I couldn’t help it but the fluorescent fixture above me started to flicker: “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” she asked me, “A little trick-or-treating for the three sisters?”

Yesssssssss….!!!” Sammi groaned, bouncing again and clapping, “Trick or Treat!!”
