Conspiracy.

The Neon Dark Universe is not immune from such speculation....
So here are some conspiracy theories touted by those who have worked or work in the zone.
#1: The Mistress and Caterina are the same person.
Both companies started at the same time, both were of roughly equal size and both share many of the same traits. But why Would you make two of your own companies fight against each other?
To push the perception of market scarcity. If it was just one company ruling the roost extracting Neon Dark it would signal to others to come and try.
While there is a hot conflict underway it warns off most from trying. Plus it allows her to control the market price wholly.
#2: The mistress was assassinated years ago by Caterina.
Caterina successfully assaulted the mistresses transport, killing her and installed an agent. The reasoning being much of what was outlined in point #1.
#3: the Azologoth is a single entity with human depopulation as a goal.
The Mistress and Caterina were both consumed by an azologoth early on and are infected with a parasite that controls them.
They do everything in their power to feed women to them to breed a new species and also make humanity addicted to neon dark.
