The line between coldness and cruelty is blurry at times.
Coldness would be "a unit is going to cost more to recover than to leave to expend, so expend her and replace"
Cruel would be "send her in on her own watch her get expended"
However most of the higher ranking members are quite cruel people.
A unit is something of numerical value only, such as a combat unit, command unit, training unit, elite unit.
They are a digit with a set value with a set purpose.
While admin assistants, managers, mistresses and franchise holders are seen as people, characters if you will in the mistresses eyes. Often called VIP or POV (persons of value)
The others, the units are always faceless, uniform and expendable.
The general view of the POV on the Units is one of distain.
They view them as unintelligent, desperate, unskilled and very interchangeable.
The POV are generally people with a higher than average IQ, plenty of drive & can be quite often recruited directly from the outside corporate world.
They are gradually introduced into the Mallera-9 world over a period of months where they are exposed to more and more of the dark side of the operations.
Eventually seeing the internal workings and the meat grinder the island actually is.
By the time they have been on the island for 12 months, they view CPD or the Alliance as the fire and the Black Faction combat force as the water to throw on the fire.
Operational income is very visible to them, with bonuses awarded for Neon Dark obtained and their rational for sacrificing Combat Units becomes more and more normalised.
Orc controls the behaviour of the combat units, but money controls the behaviour of the POV.
After months or even years without leaving an operation, vices and desire begins to catch up with them. Fraternization with anyone is prohibited and can result in them being fired from their position.
But there is grey area with regards to discipline and operations and with some psychopathic tendencies coming evident after months without release of tensions they begin to manifest in other ways.
One of the most common practices is "missions to nowhere" a term coined amongst higher ranking POV for sending squads or rotundas on missions to nowhere.
For the most part operations go ahead with 1 or 2 units being consumed per month in a sector. When a skirmish erupts over an Azog the base comes to life with Combat Units running around everywhere.
POV's tend to find the phenomena exciting or slightly erotic as hundreds of women getting dressed and forming up, piling into transports armed.
The bigger said thrill is when a large portion do not return.
Some POV have developed crushes or fascinations with certain combat units, they may conduct disciplinary sessions for no reason at all or even repurpose them to other roles. However both are frowned upon by the Mistress.
Another practice is called "over her" which is putting said crush into very dangerous situations such as on patrol for 20 days straight or sending her on solo patrols until she doesnt return.
There is a saying in high command "breaking eggs" with reference to making a cake, so really mincing through units with high casualties to achieve a goal fast. This is acceptable.
However the other term that floats around in POV (remember these are non combat) is "slipped out of hand" another take on the egg analogy, except they are deliberately dropping eggs just to watch them smash.
Its exciting for them to watch a squad go against an auto turret, vehicle or large enemy force. They often rationalise it to cover it up but sometimes get caught out.
Often when they are caught they get reprimanded the first time, the second time they are removed from their duties and placed into HQ or the "bad girls school" where they are educated into another role.
Some however get away, Vanessa was Serena's pet girl, she could get away with anything and after her hard attempts at getting the case, the Mistress promoted her.
So there are rules for some and rules for others.
