Orth was founded 1900 years ago and the Ganja corps didn't stick around to settle there. But then you have the time dilation effects that Ozen mentioned get stronger the deeper you go to consider...

There's so little I can say without just sucking the fun from you guys and your own explorations of the story, so maybe a quick Recap of what we know by now. The Abyss, as far as we know has 6, maaaybe 7 layers. The deeper you go, the harsher the consequences will be if you try to ascend. Layer 1: Nausea, Discomfort, 2: Severe Headaches, 3: Hallucinations, 4: Bleeding from Everywhere, 5: Loss of all sense, and 6: Hollowing or certain Death. Alongside that, there is significant time-dilation the deeper you go. The last time this was referenced was back on Layer 2 when they met Ozen, and that was a difference of a few months. We aren't clear on the strength of it exactly, nor are we clear how much stronger it is on the 6th layer. For all we know, the difference between the previous group and the current group could be a matter of years, decades, possibly even millennia. Several characters have made reference to an "event" meant to occur regarding the Abyss everyone 2000 years, and the foreshadowing of this event is called the "birthday sickness" where children living on the surface near the abyss randomly die on their birthday. When moved away from the mouth of the Abyss, they return to full health very quickly, so the illness is likely to be the curse of the Abyss extending out into the surface. Bondrewd's research is being done entirely to ensure people can survive whatever this event will be. He sacrificed his own humanity and many children he actually loved for this cause. And one thing to note from this episode, and I could be wrong, but looking at the Ganja corps descent montage, it looked like they were moving faster, but it also looked like they didn't even encounter the same landscapes on the upper levels as Riko and Reg might've. Maybe the Abyss itself was different during their time? Who knows. You also mentioned the remarkable "abyss-like" effects that happened to people on the ship. You might not remember, but it was mentioned very early in like episode 2 that Orth society revolves around selling powerful artefacts found in the Abyss to surface nations around the world, potentially to use in wars. I don't even want to imagine a guy suped up with Bondrewds kit wreaking havoc on the surface, but what if that's what happened to that ship? All I know is, I'm super happy to be watching this with you guys again. Yours was the first reaction I watch to Season 1, and was easily my favorite. Thanks guys!
