Because he was temporarily connected to the hivemind he had accidentally latched on to a Demodog consciousness. After landing in the Upside Down and his connection to the main hivemind getting cut the connection to his Demodog survived. As such they move as one and it's partly why he survived for nine months in the Upside-down. And yes I have thought way to much on this.
