I am not entirely sure if Re-Animator was taken from Lovecraft, but can we pretend it was so you can cover it? That was awesome! I am not as familiar with the works as I should be...being an English major and all. However, I really enjoyed this episode.

My major impression while watching your review Dom is that they took a Lovecraft story and turned it into something very similar to Children of the Corn, an act which removes all but the slightest tinge of the cosmic dread (that is there are unknowable, powerful, alien things out there they we're better off not meeting) Lovecraft was so fond of. Anyway, for what it's worth I do recall Lovecraft including a jump-start is one story (but for the life of me can't recall which one) so I imagine the plethora of them in the movie would be the least of his worries.

The biggest problem with almost any Lovecraft book being translated to film is that quite often, when a character goes insane upon seeing something, it has nothi g to do with how the thing looks, and is because of the supernatural power emanating from it. People don't go insane looking at Cthulhu because he is ugly. They go insane because they are looking at a multidimensional being of chaotic power. That sort of aspect doesn't translate well to film, unless you didn't show the monsters which are explicitly detailed in the books, often with a scientific description. Also, he often describes things that are impossible to replicate visually. Just like the ghost of christmas past in a Christmas Carol. You can not replicate that entity on screen. It hust won't work. So those are the biggest hurdles to cross when adapting his books. Of course, the fact that it is just a shit movie doesn't help.

Well, I know one movie I won't be watching. Yeah, I have to admit, I didn't find Lovecraft that scary when I finally broke down and read his stuff. I still enjoy Ask Lovecraft, but the real dude's stories were kind of - Eh. Still want to go back in time and smack him for the racism though. On an unrelated note - you know how I joked earlier about you slipping in joke names for the credits? When I saw the e-mail from Patreon about this, I found myself thinking about making a series of short videos where I suggest something for a LIA. Complete with pauses so if you felt like it you could edit in "What is it, Jami?" "What now, Jami?" "NO, JAMI!" I wouldn't actually do it, of course, but since I probably have the most requests in of anyone it was a funny thought. I see a lot of people in the comments on YouTube always asking for The Silence Of The Lambs. So that would be one, for sure.

Cool review Dom. I actually just watched this film about five days ago, ha ha. Talk about timing. It's not a terrible film, but it's not good either. I guess I would have considered it passable but that's just me. I've been meaning to read some Lovecraft too so I'm glad that he at least has your seal of approval for being at the very least good at setting up atmosphere and a chilling narrative. Again, good review Dom.
