I had the movie as a kid and I watched it over and over again. I never read the book, though I did come across it once and I did intend to read it but I never got around to it for whatever reason.

I was in the target demographic for this movie when it came out, but probably unusually for said demographic had read the book first. I remember being very angry at the movie for one change you didn't mention: in the film, Curdie (and later the rest of the cast) sings one song against the goblins. In the book, it's stated that the goblins get used to songs after a while so he was constantly having to make up new rhymes on the spot.
Upon revisiting it as an older person, I think the movie's pretty loyal to the plot but very inconsistent about the tone. You already mentioned how different grandma Irene is, but I also thought the goblin royal family were way off. They were genuinely kind of clever and menacing in the book, but in the film were more like Saturday morning cartoon villains.
