The Phantom of the Opera (Musical) ~ Lost in Adaptation

Comments

I saw a.. im not sure what to call it. tongue in cheek? version many years ago at the MGM in reno. I think the cast was having a day off which is why the tickets were so cheap for my father and I. That version was quite hilarious, when it wasn't pants crap scary. The MGM's play room did have a moving chandelier and they abused that on more that one one-off scene. This is a entertaining story, the musical is immortal (Seriously check out Lindsey Sterling's video on the theme) and the story very good in it's boiled down essence. But Yes, I agree, the Lloyd Webber version (flawed as the man is) is a needed adaptation from the original material.

Regarding Andrew Lloyd Webber projecting some of himself onto the Opera Ghost; I remember from Terry Pratchett's novel Maskerade (for those who don't know it a lot of the plot is a satire of The Phantom of the Opera), that the operas written by Walter Plinge, the Ankh-Morpork Opera Ghost, were all thin-veiled references to Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals.

Matthew Tyler

90s miniseries with Charles Dance and Teri Polo made her blonde too.

I don't know how true it is, but I've heard that Webber claims Leroux was a terrible writer. But I still say that Webber's adaptation sucks. I used to like it but the more I've reread the novel the more I hate it. On a side note, as a nearsighted blue eyed blonde I hate, hate, HATE the fact that pretty much every adaptation except the Claude Rains version turns Christine into a brown eyed brunette with 20/20 vision when she is - get this - A NEARSIGHTED BLUE EYED BLONDE! Hell, the nearsightedness actually helps explain why Erik found it so easy to fool Christine at first. There's a whole scene from her and Raoul's childhood where she thought she could see fairies at an age most kids accept they aren't real because she couldn't see lights at a distance clearly.
