Earthsea ~ Lost in Adaptation

Longest. Episode. Ever.

Sorry there's no bloopers yet but they should be available on the public version when its posted.

Also: I'm using a new system now where I upload videos intended for Patreon to a backup youtube channel and not the main one. One of the advantages of this is no adverts tho a disadvantage is if you leave a comment there it won't be on the public video when thats posted, sorry.

Anyways hope you enjoy ^__^

Earthsea ~ Lost in Adaptation

Maybe at some point, if I ever have any free time.

As LeGuin has been my favorite writer for about 2/3rds of my GenX life (because below the age of around 9 I hadn't read her yet) I FEEL SO CLEANSED RIGHT NOW. (I adore the outro as well.)

This was exceptional!!! Also... thank you so much for your sacrifice in watching this pile of garbage

Once again a great review!

Do you plan to do a LIA on the Studio Ghibli version? I know it wouldn't survive an hour on YouTube but it would be fine on Patreon

I got my hands on the first three books among my brother's collection way back in the day. I loved these, which makes me all the gladder that I never saw this (or, for that matter, the Ghibli adaptation, which is apparently not quite as bad, but still a travesty). I only got to read books 4 and 5 way later, and in all honesty, "Tehanu" is probably the low point of the pentalogy ("The Other Wind" is better, but neither really lives up to the first three).

Yeah...still kind of an isolated episode though. Not to the extent of Bombadil in LotR, but I can't help but feel this entire thing could have been resolved differently, especially put pretty much next to the incident where Ged finds his half of the Ring of Erreth-Akbe, which also *felt* like it was completely unconnected to anything, but much later turns out to be kind of a big deal.

It's a placeholder for the bloopers

The "demon" in the secluded castle was also one of the Nameless Ones or the "Old Powers". They weren't isolated only to the Tombs. It was the nameless ones, that belonged to that specific place on top of which the castle was constructed, that manifested as the flying creatures that chased Ged and the witch woman, who were both in bird form, and who caught up to her and killed her, while Ged barely escaped in his hawk form. However, it was his panic in fleeing in bird form and strain from flying non-stop all the way back to Gont to see Ogion (a wizard who remains too long in an alternate form can lose themselves and forget how to become human again, and this almost happens to Ged in this instance) that led to him being broken and drove the story forward as the mechanism through which he meets up with Ogion again and humbles himself to his original teacher again. So it wasn't just a throwaway scene. It was what drove him back to Ogion and caused him to doubt his wisdom and power. It was the hero's lowest point and greatest doubt.

Wow that was a bitchin' takedown of a complete POS, Dom. Well done. And I liked The Ballad of Ursula K Le Guin a lot! I'm guessing the ~20 seconds of nothing but your greenscreen background after the end credits wasn't intentional?

So conflicted.. I really want to watch this episode, but you made me slap myself for not reading the books, Dominic, and you gushing about them made me want to read them. And now spoilers. What am I to do?!

Sanne

I have to point out that audible.com does NOT have the complete series of books. I assume this was checked, but you can't even get book 1 from this site. If you are joining for that, you will be disappointed.

Anyone else but me kind of want to see a video now of The Don’s top 10 things he could have gone over in adaptations, but left out?

Robert Pope

Just based on your prelude video.... hoo boy, I’m expecting some serious Dom rage on a scale we’ve never seen before

I'm glad for the call-out of the father's [was that a cry of grief?????] moment when Ged falls off the cliff.

The scene where Tenar sneaks into the tomb for the last time to help Ged, sneaking past the evil cult leader digging up evidence against her, remains one of the most chilling parts of any book I've ever read

Tim Bates

Oh man, that thumbnail! I'm down.

Always excited for a new video but im especially interested in this one.

Can’t wait to watch this when I’m home from work. My sister and I used to watch this miniseries when we were kids and we liked it a lot. But when we tried to rewatched as teens...whooooo boy was it bad.

cosmotron

I love the books and I'm so excited to watch this miniseries be ripped to shreds!

48 minutes... challenge accepted
