Medics and Corpsman are on of the few jobs in the military that couldn't give two shits about rank they'll tell off two star generals if they need to

2021-06-10 18:44:56 +0000 UTCMy dad was a fire direction control chief for field artillery. Stayed a SSG for 18 years because if he went to SFC he would have to go to battalion and he wanted to stay down on the gun line. He managed to make 24 years and retire. Had he accepted the E7 slot he would have made 26 or 28.

2021-06-06 17:46:38 +0000 UTCposted in youtube but ill put it here as well: In terms of denying a promotion or accepting, its usually up to the commanding officer and the situation at hand (i.e at war). Even though Winters denied/didnt want the promotion, SInk gave the impression "No, you ARE promoted. Meet me at CP", so really he had no choice. My Aunt has denied promotions in the Army (retired US ARMY LTC Counter-Intel) to stay in the field with her company but eventually, she was "voluntold" for promotion according to her.

2021-05-31 00:46:05 +0000 UTCIn the scene with the charge, the red smoke was delayed because Joe Liebgott switched the fuse off of a frag grenade with the fuse on the smoke grenade to make an alert system. He gave winters that smoke. Smoke grenade fuses have no delay where that of a frag is usually 5 to 7 seconds.

2021-05-30 19:26:37 +0000 UTCThis is a great episode. Not my ‘favorite’ but I have personal knowledge of it (later in the series) and will explain fully at that point. This is a great lead in to one of the most notorious and brutal battles in history for sure.

2021-05-30 18:22:58 +0000 UTCExactly. With three different components. The Schutzstaffel they encountered were Waffen SS (weapon SS-particularly good fighters). SD (Sicherheitsdienst) - intelligence operation and considered closely aligned with the Gestapo. Allgemeiene SS (meaning German SS) and particularly aligned with the office of race and settlement. All three were considered highly trained fighters. The SD was primarily responsible for implementing the ‘final solution’ to the Jewish question (though all branches, in some way were implicated). The SS comprised of Panzer divisions. It’s confusing, I know. The SS were (as pointed out in a previous comment) initially Hitler’s personal guard which became some of his elite units. Sorry for the long explanation. I’ve studied German language and history and lived in Austria, visited Germany and other European countries countless times so I know quite a bit about the beginnings and end of the Third Reich and those who participated in it - willingly or not.

2021-05-30 18:18:55 +0000 UTCI watch this show at least once a year. Had it on DVD, but now watch it on HBO. This year, watching it with you guys, makes it even better. One of my top ten shows of all time. I weep every time I see that ending, with all of them walking into 'who knows what?' BTW...that scene with Doc, telling them off, is still one of my favorites. Winters didn't blink an eye because - like you said, Steven, - the Medics are so important in keeping our men alive in battle, there really isn't anything he could say. See you in the next one.

2021-05-30 16:51:06 +0000 UTCSS means "Schutzstaffel". It was Hitler's personal guard at first, then morphed into the most elite units in the German army.

2021-05-30 16:36:17 +0000 UTCI've seen this show at least 30 times and this is by far my favorite episode. The music in the final scene as they walk with low ammo and no winter gear into one of the most famous battles of America's involvement in the war still gives me chills.
