I don’t think flint hates Miranda. I do think he does love her and has feelings for her. He just was in love with Thomas and wasn’t able to save him. Thomas did tell ms Barlow to leave and for flint and her to take care and look after each other. This show is so so so good

I had a hunch that Thomas was into men when they revealed that he has no problem that Miranda had affairs. In hindsight it makes so much sense that Flint was actually in love with him and not her. How he looks at her and doesn't really even seem to like her that much lol. This story got painful all of a sudden.

Sorry if you've interpreted this as arguing. You mentioned the victim's name in the first post. That's why I politely stated it was a spoiler. Just don't want N&S or any patrons who are watching along for the first time spoilt. All good on my end, have a good one

After I elected to delete the first comment, the name(s) of those killed were not in my follow up comment. Also this had been discussed ‘why kill Thomas’ in the post show which I figured out at the beginning of season 2. If you want to argue, be my guest but I won’t be responding to any further comments on this subject. It’s pretty self-evident at this point. With that, I’m done and back to work. Peace

But the victim has not been revealed yet. That's what I was referring to as a spoiler when you stated the victim's identity. All the viewers can discern right now is that Flint killed someone on that ship. The show reveals everything in its entirety later on

Marcus Aurelius ‘Meditations’ is a great ‘book’ to read too. I like how they incorporate literature to underline the story

Nancy Peterson

Nope I was right. Season 1 the murder is discussed with a flashback to seeing Flint coming out of a chamber bloodied and with a bloody sword (episode 3) and then Gates and Flint (in episode 7 of season 1). FYI… I do believe Flint loved Miranda but was in love with Thomas.

Literally joined your patreon for this full episode lol. It’s so interesting, I never once thought Flint hated Miranda, even though now thinking about the show up to this point I do totally get that interpretation. I think he loves her more than anyone else alive at this point, they’re so close after everything they’ve shared over the years. There’s definitely feelings of resentment from both sides - Flint resents her for telling him not to go save Thomas, Miranda resents Flint for essentially trapping her in this lonely life on the island - but at the same time they’re the only one the other has, the only one they can both be themselves with, and they’re just so familiar with each other in this beautiful way. It’s so complicated but still, the overwhelming feeling i get from them is this love and a deep, if troubled friendship. There’s a scene way back in 1x04 that I feel like perfectly portrays their relationship, where Flint briefly gets angry at Miranda for reading *that* book, after which Miranda gets upset and talks about how she just wants life to be normal again and then his demeanor completely softens and he goes to comfort her as she cries. Idk, i think it’s all just so sad and beautiful, and like every Flint/Miranda scene in season 1, that scene totally changes once you know the context. I love this show❤️

Doubt it’s a spoiler but I’ll delete anyway.

I think that's a bit of a spoiler Nancy. The reveal of what actually happened on that ship and who Flint killed comes later in the season

Glad you guys made it to this point. And this is only one feather in the cap of many more great moments that make this show so special.

Miranda had a line last episode that was something like "You don't know what you've seen, you only think you do". A nice wink from the writers before the big reveal. It is a lot of fun to revisit season 1 and the flashbacks with this knowledge in mind. Once you know, it is really obvious that Flint and Thomas are making eyes at each other from the start. The rumor spread about Flint and Miranda was that her husband had a mental breakdown after learning his wife and best friend where having an affair and that he later died in a mental asylum. Flint's rage is much more understandable now. He lost the love of his life and was rejected by England to the very core of his being. Thomas asked Flint and Miranda to stay together and take care of each other. He meant it out of love for them but he unintentionally ties them together in this unhappy coexistence. There's so much tragedy in the story. It's beautifully written. I don't feel like Flint hates Miranda at all. He deeply loves her but she is also tied into his greatest pain and his greatest regret -- that he didn't save Thomas. It's baffling to all fans that the show wasn't huge. It's so good. Part of it was probably that it was on Starz which alot of people won't subscribe to. Plus the critics just dismissed it after early season 1. I don't feel like critics make or break a show but they can help lesser known ones break into the mainstream with a lot of coverage which the show didn't get.

So true about why this show isn't more popular. It's sad that so many idiots were turned off this show because of this episode. Even though it's a fan favourite, the episode is the lowest rated of the series on IMDB which proves your assertion about some of the crowd this show initially attracted. Unfortunately and ironically a lot of people who would've loved this show never gave it a chance due to the stigma attached to anything pirate related

I love that everyone almost has the exact same reaction to this episode. It answers a lot of questions about Flint that make everyone want to go back and re-watch season 1. The writers told Toby Stephens about this storyline right from the beginning so that his performance in season 1 would show the subtle things like his resentment for Miranda. And Toby Stephens knocked it out of the park. I would say that he’s always had love for Miranda as well, but the resentment from losing Thomas is there. This show continues to take off from here too, I think obviously Game of Thrones airing and this being on Starz definitely hurt the word getting out about it. And Michael Bay being a producer also played a part, everyone expects a certain type of show with him. Which is unfortunate, I think people expected only Pirates, sex, and explosions and I don’t think people thought this show was going to be as masterfully written as it was.

That was my personal favourite reveal in all of TV. Never has a moment changed the entire landscape of a story and its main character the way this did. It was both beautiful and heartbreaking. I still remember watching it the first time and thinking Flint just became the most interesting character I have ever witnessed. It also made me respect Miranda so much more knowing what she endured. And yes, from its eloquent (and badass) dialogue to the intricate story construction and the incredible multi-dimensional characters, the writing of this show is second to none. In fact no other show feels more like reading a book than Black Sails. I've always viewed it as a perfect 38 chapter story.

The Flint and Barlow relationship is so complex, it's hard to put into words. There's so much pain, and Flint clearly has a deep well of resentment for her, but I don't think hatred is the right word either. Before losing Thomas, they had a great friendship and a deep respect for each other. And now, after all they've been through together, they're trauma bonded, and no one knows their story except each other. Silver noted before how miserable Flint is, but imagine how much worse it would be without a single other person left in the world that truly knows him. Flint and Barlow *need* each other, despite the bitterness. And yeah, Black Sails struggled to catch on for a number of reasons. Starz has never been great at marketing, and Game of Thrones cast a massive shadow over everything. Season 1 was notoriously hard to follow; I don't think it's *slow* per se, but it's hard to get invested when you don't know who to root for, since Black Sails doesn't really have any "good guys". But even among the few people that were watching, the reveal of Flint's sexuality wasn't exactly universally well-received. A lot of people didn't expect a show this macho and violent to have a gay love story, and they just couldn't reconcile their enjoyment of Flint with their homophobia. It's honestly sad, but I'm glad that reactors have given the show a second wind.

OMG so heartbreaking! Within a single scene the audience realizes they're watching a very different story than they first thought. Both Flint & Barlow are instantly deeper & more interesting people. Which immediately reflects on the other characters as well - this episode heightens everything. Black Sails is excellently written & performed all the way through. It deserves far more attention than it gets.
