I love how Abigail's narration is used to frame this episode. The show is a story about stories and the power of story telling. Flint telling Abigail about Billy's past serves both in giving us Billy's backstory but also telling Abigail a story she can relate to -- kidnapped and taken from your family, fearing you will never see them again. Flint really humanizes the pirates to her in that moment. The show really addresses how many pirates weren't just heartless criminals but men and women who ended up in places like Nassau because of oppression and corrupt systems of government. Billy was pressed on a ship, basically government sanctioned slavery. Flint exiled for his sexuality. Anne and Eleanor are no-confirming women of their era. Max a biracial woman who would've been on the bottom of society's ladder. Vane a former slave. They all came to Nassau because "civilization" has deemed them unwanted.

Vane's letter will always give me chills! Love how this show makes you question (amongst many things) who are the true monsters of this world.

I don't know about anyone else but I'm genuinely enjoying this show and each episode even more on this rewatch which I didn't think possible given it's my #1 show already. What a masterpiece of an episode of TV! Loved every Abigail scene and it was so smart and interesting to tell the Walrus storyline through her eyes. Jack and Featherstone will never fail to entertain me. The power of a story and Silver's ability to tell it, yep. And that ending...I still remember the shock and awe I was feeling the first time watching and realising what Vane did and where he was.

Vane is there to take the Man of War, that's all that matters to him right now.

This is honestly my favorite episode of the show so far, even over the big reveal of 2x5. I love how they use Abigail as a framing device, and how she's heard these horror stories of pirates her whole life but now she's discovering a whole different truth. It's also the perfect place for Mr Scott's line about how Flint's greatest power isn't violence, but his ability to tell stories, and that Silver may well be his equal. And on top of all that, we get Billy's backstory, which is a tearjerker in its own right. And it's all tied together perfectly by Abigail seeing how the men mourn the death of a crewmate, who incidentally was inadvertently sentenced to death by Silver's own will. Part of what Black Sails does so well is actually giving audiences what they want. It doesn't just leave us on a cliffhanger, where we have to tune in next week to get to the good stuff. It straight up gives us the good stuff, and then promises even more of it. This episode gave us the long-awaited reveal of Flint's secret mission for Mrs Barlow that put his crew's lives at risk, a plot point first introduced more than a season ago. It also gave us the death of Guthrie, a shocking moment especially since it came so soon after Eleanor seemingly reconciled with him. And the biggest thing for me, Vane's letter to Eleanor. He hardly brought up the warship or the money or any of the material things. The focus of the letter was that he had been a slave before and he would not be a slave again, and Guthrie was involved in a plot to return Nassau to Britain, which Vane could never accept. Vane is the closest character to being the kind of monster that Abigail had heard stories about, but she recognizes that even the monsters among them have even more to fear from the British empire and men like her father, which Vane fully exemplifies.

Nikki: He's a pirate! Flint: And a good man!

Such a amazing ep! It builds to that letter, so carefully, elegantly. Raising the intensity a layer at a time. The most HONEST person in this show is Vane. Vane tells you like it is and honors his word. And truly I feel he is the only one that is fighting for the island's freedom. Without vain motives. SO GOOD!
