'Power of a story' is prob my favourite theme of the show. Love how Silver responded, at the same time, wouldn't mind a John Silver storytelling session recounting all their adventures

2021-09-12 00:16:52 +0000 UTCThe camera staying on Silver's face highlights to me how this show gets it like few others do. The importance of the scene is not to show a gory death, it's to emphasis who Silver is becoming.

2021-09-11 20:46:43 +0000 UTCBut Long John Silver is born!! Gone are the days of the mischief. The charismatic, slippery kid-like guy who is always sliding his hand in cookie jar, with smiles and winks. Also i love Red! She’s so badass. And hush Eleanor nobody believes a word of that

2021-09-11 08:40:17 +0000 UTCAlright, let's get the obvious out of the way- this is the episode where Silver really steps up his game!!! One other thing I want to address though is how the show establishes the legend of Captain Flint. A lot of Black Sails fans kind of scorn Pirates of the Caribbean for its jokey lightheartedness, but I actually like using it as a point of comparison. When Barbossa is first introduced, he's described as "a man so evil hell itself spat him back out". How is this accomplished? With a literal magic curse. But Flint? Flint comes back from the dead without magic, without curses, with nothing but the power of a story. And when the men say that they know Flint is dead, Silver could give a whole explanation. "Actually we weren't quite dead. We were becalmed for a while, Flint sat in his room tripping balls, I made the boys some sashimi, it was a weird couple of days but we're cool now." But no, instead he says the shortest, simplest thing possible- "Not anymore." And with just those words, he recast Flint as a man so terrifying that death itself cannot stop his fury.

2021-09-11 07:42:06 +0000 UTC"My name is John Silver. And I've got a long fucking memory." Top ten most badass epic moments! Flint is my favorite character, but moments like that from Silver could give Flint a run for his money. The commentary from y'all honestly helps me re-process this show in such a fun way. Watching it through with you, I have a heightened awareness of those high stakes for everyone and it's really amazing to notice how much that drives the story! This show understands the importance of character motivation.

2021-09-11 04:14:26 +0000 UTCI'm starting to see that hatred you have for Rogers haha. Also definitely noticed when he started talking about playing the villain, it was shot with only the scarred side of his face visible

2021-09-11 03:51:55 +0000 UTCThat John Silver scene is one of my favs of all time. I feel many shows have shocking moments just for the sake of it, but again with Black Sails, what makes any moment/scene so meaningful is the story behind it. We learn of Silver’s memory skills back in s1. We witness this season the physical pain caused by his leg and why he endures it. All of which culminates in this one cathartic moment of pure badassery. Also love how the scene is shot with the focus on Silver’s face, emphasising both the pain and transformation he’s experiencing. For me, each stomp represents another nail in the coffin of the man Silver used to be.

2021-09-11 03:29:14 +0000 UTC-I love how much y'all are loving the show. -"We're all villains in Nassau" is the perfect line to summarize the characters. Everyone is the hero of their story which makes them the villain of someone else's. -I have deep hatred for Woodes Rogers and this episode highlights some of why. He is no Thomas Hamilton. Thomas genuinely wanted to improve lives and help people. Rogers just sees the pardons as an easy out, a quick way to avoid a fight but nothing actually changes under him. Look at how quick he's willing to go back on his agreement and turn Jack over to Spain. And then he's like "What a story you'll have to tell people to make me a villain!". I'm like "Bitch, you are a lying, double-crossing, pro-slavery, colonizer. It's not THAT hard". -Silver has an amazing arc from a smarmy conman in episode 1 to now. One of the best characters arcs of any series.
