ICP, TRASHY TAPES AND PS2 GAMES: HOW DID BACKYARD WRESTLING BECOME A CRAZE? | Kim Justice

So I've wanted to look at these two PS2 Backyard Wrestling games for a while, but I kind of also wanted to look at why they even exist in the first place. So here's a look at not just them, but the whole Backyard Wrestling craze of the late 90's-early 2000's, featuring clowns from Detroit, people hurting themselves and a load of unbelievably popular trashy video tapes. Enjoy!

(I've muted the bloody sound on the intro by mistake, which is annoying)

Jimmy Havoc and Will Ospreay were talking about backyarding a couple of weeks ago on twitter, it wouldn't surprise me if a couple of more more lads on the UK started off in the backyard.

Don't fret, I suspect most reasonably intelligent non-Americans get that Daggorath. Speaking as an Englishman, we have our own equivalent of knuckle-dragging degenerates over on our side of the divide.

I can easily imagine that people living in Europe and Asia have the stereotype that all Americans are gun toting, pickup truck driving, wrastling watching, Neanderthals.who always act like the guests they see on the Jerry Springer Show. Notice I'm not necessarily saying that those sterotypes are completely wrong. Keep in mind that the people doing all that dangerous and crazy shit in their back yards are doing so in the country with the most expensive health care in the world.

Health insurance and wrestling? Now there's a subject. I'll go into it a bit: In most wrestling companies where guys are contracted, you are classed as an "independent contractor" and not an "employee". Technically this means that if you get injured and require healthcare, the company isn't necessarily liable for it. In recent years big companies such as WWE DO cover their wrestlers (the current wellness policy can also cover past employees if they require, say, drug rehab), but that hasn't always been the case - there have been many cases of guys who’ve got a long-term injury and then got their walking papers. It’s pretty scummy. This is often why you get a lot of wrestlers doing acting on the side - if you act on screen, you’re eligible for SAG membership/coverage (there is no such thing as a pro wrestlers’ union). When you get into indies, where you’re mostly paid by appearance? Well, it gets even more murky. Depends on the promotion. Some will help you out if you get injured on their show, some may tell you to fuck off and then you have to decide whether a legal battle is also worth taking on along with the medical bills AND the loss of income from not working. There’s a philosophy throughout the business that unless you’re REALLY banged up, you should still be working - if you’re not working, you’re not making money. The ICP guys, as far as promoters go, very much fall on the good side - they take care of the guys they use. But even if generally things are still better in some regard than they were say, 10-20 years ago, things definitely still suck.

I've always been curious about the kind of insurance/occupational hazard paperwork accompanies wrestling - the more professional sort, obviously. Maybe there are special contractual technicalities in legalese specifically for Juggalos... :p One of the things I love about your channel Kim, is that you can pique my curiosity towards things I've otherwise never looked at, and in some cases had no actual interest in. Whilst I'm not an actual fan of wrestling, I find the real life personalities and the edgy weirdness of the era really fascinating. I even like your videos about football games! ;p
