ROH vs. CZW - Prelude: The Rise of Necro

CAUTION: This video and the match it covers is quite bloody and graphic, to say the least.

Before Ring of Honor and Combat Zone Wrestling lit up the indies with their tremendous promotional feud in 2006, a couple of events in 2005  paved the way for what was previously unthinkable to actually take place: A stiff match with a couple of trainees led to one of the great style clashes, and one of wrestling's most brutal blasts of violence -- Samoa Joe vs. Necro Butcher. Here's a look back at this white-hot indy  classic. Enjoy!

(While the YouTube wrestling channel is very much a thing, I imagine this video will be exclusive to this page for quite some time. After all, I can't envision any way that this vid would get on YouTube without some major restrictions...)

ROH vs. CZW - Prelude: The Rise of Necro

Comments

Yeah, it's certainly a hazy one! Hahaha. The water bottle may well have been the guilty party. Wonderful lovely comment, thanks very much - highly appreciated :)

Sorry if this is a little long but… I’ve followed your stuff on YouTube for quite a while. Just signed up here. Nice to see the unedited stuff. Not that your videos ever suffered from being edited. But as with any film, it’s always nice to see the Director’s Cut. Just wanted to say in general how well executed all of your work is. You have an engaging voice and delivery. Definitely in my top three as far as WCC’s are concerned. I chose this video to comment on because I wanted to specifically touch on the two “planned”… um… concrete-forehead connections. I liked your sandbag idea because Necro has been known to revise history in the past. And it would make sense that he would want to try and cover that up by saying it was planned. But after watching it back in your video and a rewatch of the whole match, I doubt it. I’ve heard many say over the years that Joe hated Necro or vice-versa and that may be true but if you’re looking for proof you won’t find it in this match. For two guys known for working stiff at different points in their careers, they seemed to be going out of their way NOT to sandbag here. This is a wonderful example of two men playing up tribalism with their words only to show everyone that you don’t have to work that way. You can clearly see Necro preparing his limbs for the lift before both bumps, and that’s half the battle. Speaking as someone who trained to be pro (3 years secretly, no less. I’m sure you can imagine how difficult it was for me to hide freaking ROPE BURNS from my boyfriend at the time. Coming out as a gay man in the south? No problem. Telling your significant other that you want to be a professional wrestler? I’m hiding in the proverbial closet. Suffice it to say, I’m now a graphic designer who dabbles in writing about wrestling when I’m lucky.😂) these two “spots” really shouldn’t be called spots. It is nearly impossible to plan them to go in the particularly awkward way that they did. Considering this and your astute observation about the water bottle… It is much more likely that these two men went out there on this particular night and beat the hell out of each other in the same manner they had beaten and been beaten a million times before. But on this night, in this match, we were treated to a beautifully crafted massacre that just so happened to include two happy, nearly life-ending, accidents. And as with many of these types of matches, it’s the accidents that elevate them to such a place that we’re still talking about them nearly 25 years later. And just imagine, this match happened in the dark days before we were all neck aware. Neck the halls, KJ.
